Case study
Full loft boarding in an older home
A big, open loft in an older house with a blockwork gable. The owners wanted to use the whole space, so we boarded it out wall to wall.
What we found
- •This older loft had a generous floor area and good headroom, but nothing to stand on.
- •Older cut roofs like this often have more open space than modern trussed lofts, which makes them ideal for storage once there's a proper floor.
The result
The whole loft is now usable storage, and it's safe to walk on anywhere. Boarding a loft this size is a bigger job than a walkway, but it turns a dead space into one of the most useful rooms in the house.
If your loft has a lot of space going to waste, take a look at our loft boarding service. If the insulation underneath needs topping up first, we can do that on the same visit: see loft insulation.
What we did
- Boarded the loft out wall to wall in OSB, working around the roof timbers and braces.
- Kept the insulation in place under the boards, so the rooms below stay warm.
- Fitted the boards tight around the timbers and up to the gable wall for a clean, solid floor.
- Boarded a section next to the hatch in chipboard for easy access from the ladder.
