Loft Insulation in Tonyrefail

We fit loft insulation in Tonyrefail and the surrounding CF39 villages, including Trebanog, Coedely and Thomastown. Our team travels from Cardiff, along the M4 to junction 34 and then up the A4119 past Llantrisant, so Tonyrefail is a run we know well.

Most lofts we see in this part of the Ely valley have something in them, but rarely enough. A thin layer laid decades ago, flattened by boxes and patched around a water tank, does very little against the wind that comes over the surrounding hills. We survey for free, explain what we find and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Colliery terraces, council semis and newer streets

Tonyrefail began as a farming community at the head of the River Ely and grew quickly once deep mining arrived in the second half of the nineteenth century, with Coedely Colliery becoming the main employer. The older housing reflects that: rows of stone and brick terraces, many with rear lanes, small lofts and a single narrow hatch over the landing.

The village then spread outwards through the twentieth century, with large areas of council-built semis and terraces that have since passed into private ownership, and more recent private estates on the lower ground. Those post-war houses usually have a simple, wide loft that is easy to insulate well. Many also have a cold water tank and pipework that were left exposed when earlier insulation went in, which is something we put right as part of the job.

Because Tonyrefail sits high, with open hillside and farmland close to many streets, exposure to cold wind is greater than in Cardiff. A loft insulated to a proper depth makes a noticeable difference to how quickly bedrooms lose their warmth.

What Tonyrefail homes usually need

Loft with a deep, even layer of mineral wool insulation laid across the joists and the loft hatch in the foreground

Loft Insulation in Tonyrefail

Most Tonyrefail lofts already have a thin, settled layer of old insulation, and topping it up with Knauf Earthwool to 270mm is usually a one-day job.

The roomier lofts in the post-war semis are good storage space, and boards raised on loft legs let you use it without flattening new insulation.

Practical points for Tonyrefail homes

Plenty of Tonyrefail terraces have no parking at the front but a lane behind, which can be the easier way to bring materials in. Let us know when you book and we will plan the route from the van.

In ex-council houses we sometimes find that the loft has never been separated properly from the neighbour's, or that the hatch is too small for anything but a stepladder. If you plan to store things up there, our guide to boarding a loft without crushing the insulation is worth a read, and if you are hearing scratching overhead, the signs in our rodent guide will help you tell what you are dealing with.

Loft insulation in Tonyrefail: FAQs

My Tonyrefail house already has loft insulation. Is it worth adding more?

Usually, yes. A lot of the insulation we find in the village was laid years ago at a fraction of today's recommended 270mm and has since compressed. If you can see the tops of the ceiling joists, there is not enough. We measure the depth during the survey and tell you honestly whether a top-up is worthwhile before quoting.

Do you insulate the water tank and pipes in the loft?

We do. Once the loft floor is properly insulated, the roof space above becomes colder, so any tank or pipework left bare is more likely to freeze, especially in a high, exposed spot like Tonyrefail. We lag pipes, fit a jacket or insulate around the tank, and leave the area directly beneath it open so a little warmth can still rise from the room below.

How do I know if mice are getting into my loft?

Scratching at night, droppings along the joists, chewed insulation or cable sheathing, and a stale smell are the usual signs. Homes near fields and hedges see more of it in autumn when mice look for shelter. We inspect the loft, find where they are getting in, seal those gaps and replace any insulation that has been contaminated.
