Loft Insulation in Pontcanna
Tall Pontcanna roofs lose a lot of heat through the top floor, and bringing the loft up to 270mm makes the rooms below noticeably easier to keep warm.

Pontcanna, Cardiff
Pontcanna's houses were built to impress, with tall ceilings, deep bays and steeply pitched slate roofs. That height looks good from the street but means a lot of warm air rising towards a loft that, in many homes we survey, has never been insulated to a modern standard. Loft insulation in Pontcanna needs a lighter touch than on a newer estate, and that is how we approach it.
We are a local Cardiff team, so a free survey here is a short drive rather than a day trip. You get a written quote, usually within 24 hours, and most jobs are finished in a single visit.
Along Cathedral Road the large late-Victorian villas have mostly been split into flats, guesthouses and offices. In those buildings the loft is often a shared space above the top-floor flat, and the question of who is responsible for it comes up regularly. Behind the main road, the side streets towards Pontcanna Fields are lined with handsome two- and three-storey terraces.
Roof spaces here tend to be taller than in Canton or Grangetown, with heavier timbers and, in some houses, small attic rooms that were built for servants or added later. Original insulation, where there is any, is usually thin fibreglass or loose material that has settled into the gaps. Chimney breasts run up through most of these lofts, and the area around them needs careful detailing so warm, moist air does not leak into the cold roof and condense on the slates.
The houses closest to the Taff and Sophia Gardens sit on lower ground near the river, which is worth bearing in mind when we look at ventilation.

Older slate roofs over busy households and converted flats can collect condensation, so we treat any mould and fix the airflow problem behind it.

Higher ceilings mean a long reach to the hatch, and a properly sized aluminium ladder makes a tall loft safe to use for storage.
View serviceCathedral Road and the streets around it fall within a conservation area. Insulating a loft from the inside does not change how a house looks, so it rarely raises planning questions, but any work that would alter the roof externally is a different matter and we will tell you if something needs checking with the council first.
In converted villas, we are happy to quote for the whole roof space and talk to a managing agent or freeholder where several flats share the loft. If you have noticed black spotting on the underside of the roof or damp timbers, read our guide to loft condensation and mould before deciding what to do. You can also see our approach to treating mould in lofts.
That depends on your lease. In many converted buildings the roof space belongs to the freeholder, not the top-floor flat. Check your lease or ask your managing agent before booking any work. Once you know who is responsible, we can survey, quote for the roof space and talk directly to whoever needs to sign off the job.
Not if it is done properly. Problems arise when insulation is pushed into the eaves and blocks airflow, or when gaps around chimney breasts and the hatch let moist air into the roof. We keep a clear air path at the eaves, seal the hatch and look at existing ventilation before laying anything new.
Usually, yes. Attic rooms are insulated differently from an open loft, often using multifoil or a combination of materials in the sloping ceilings and the small side voids behind the walls. We look at what is accessible on the survey and explain what can realistically be improved without stripping the room back.
