Loft Insulation in Baglan

We fit loft insulation in Baglan, on the Port Talbot side of Swansea Bay, along with the surrounding SA12 streets. The team travels from Cardiff along the M4, which runs right past the village, so getting to you is simple.

Baglan climbs the lower slopes of the hills above the bay, with the moors and the coast spread out below. That position gives good views but also plenty of wind and rain coming straight in off the sea. A well-insulated loft with healthy ventilation makes a real difference to how warm these homes feel. The survey costs nothing, and a written quote normally lands within a day.

What Baglan's homes are like up in the loft

Baglan has an old church and manor history, but most of the homes you'll see today are twentieth-century and later. Much of the village is made up of estates of semis, detached houses and bungalows built up the hillside as Port Talbot grew around its steelworks and industry, with some newer developments added more recently. Older cottages and terraces are fewer, mostly in the original parts of the village.

For the loft, that mostly means pitched roofs with concrete tiles and timber trusses or traditional rafters, with a reasonable amount of space to move around. The weakness is the insulation itself. Homes from the 1960s to the 1980s were built with a thin layer by modern standards, and in many houses it has never been topped up. Over time it settles, gets moved by electricians and is covered by stored boxes.

Bungalows on the slopes are worth a special mention. Their roofs cover the whole house, and on exposed plots the eaves take a battering, so gaps and wet patches at the edges of the loft are something we look for carefully.

What Baglan homes usually need

Weather, views and practical points

Being on a slope facing the sea, Baglan feels the full force of westerly weather. When rain is driven hard against a roof, small gaps at the ridge or eaves can let water in, and a loft that is also poorly ventilated is likely to suffer condensation. We look at both before we lay any new insulation.

Most streets here have driveways or easy parking, so access is rarely a problem, though some hillside roads are steep. If you'd like to understand the damp side better, read our article on why lofts get condensation and mould. You can also see how we approach loft mould treatment.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Baglan: FAQs

Do you travel as far as Baglan from Cardiff?

Yes. Baglan is right beside the M4, so it is a direct drive west from Cardiff for our team. We cover the whole SA12 area around Baglan and Port Talbot, and we book surveys on any day of the week between 8am and 6pm.

There are black spots on the wood in our Baglan loft. Is that mould?

Quite possibly. Black spotting on rafters or on the underside of the roof is usually mould caused by condensation. On exposed sites near the bay, moist air gets into the loft and condenses on cold surfaces. We treat the affected timber with a fungicide and then deal with the cause, usually by restoring ventilation at the eaves.

Our house was built in the 1970s. Hasn't it already got loft insulation?

It probably has some, but not much by today's standards. Houses from that era were usually built with a thin layer that is well short of the 270mm now recommended, and it has often settled or been disturbed since. We measure what's there on the survey and only recommend topping it up where it will make a difference.
