Loft Insulation in Llanishen
Llanishen grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century, filling the land between the old village, the reservoirs and the railway with estates of semis, detached houses and bungalows. Many of those homes were insulated when they were built, but to standards that now look thin. Loft insulation in Llanishen is often a case of finishing a job that was started decades ago.

Post-war estates and trussed roofs
Around the older core near Station Road and Fidlas Road there are interwar semis and some earlier houses, but most of Llanishen dates from the 1950s through to the 1980s. More recent housing has also been built, including on the site of the former tax offices at Ty Glas.
From the 1960s onwards, many houses were built with factory-made trussed rafters. Those W-shaped timbers make for a loft broken up by diagonal braces, with less open space than an older cut roof. Trusses are also designed for specific loads, which means boarding and storage need planning rather than simply nailing down chipboard.
The insulation we find in these lofts is often a thin original layer, sometimes topped up once in later years. It is frequently patchy, pushed aside around the hatch and missing over extensions. Some homes have spray foam on the rafters, added more recently, which can create problems when the house is sold.
Bungalows are also common in parts of Llanishen. With every room sitting directly beneath the roof, they gain more from a well-insulated loft than almost any other house type, and their low, wide roof spaces are usually easy to work across.
What Llanishen homes usually need

Loft Insulation in Llanishen
Many Llanishen lofts still hold the thin layer laid when the estate was built, and adding a cross layer brings them up to 270mm.

Spray Foam Removal in Llanishen
Where spray foam has been applied to the rafters of a Llanishen home, we remove it and insulate at the loft floor instead.

Loft Boarding in Llanishen
Trussed roofs need storage platforms planned around the braces, and raised boarding keeps both the trusses and the insulation intact.
Boarding a trussed roof properly
Never cut or remove the diagonal braces in a trussed roof to make room for storage, as they hold the roof together. We design raised platforms that sit between and around the webs and keep loads sensible. Our article on raised loft boarding covers this in more detail.

Loft insulation in Llanishen: FAQs
My Llanishen house was built in the 1970s. Is the loft insulated?
Probably, but not to today's standard. Homes from that era were usually given a thin layer when built, and it has often been disturbed since. A survey will show the depth and condition. In most cases, laying a second layer across the joists brings it up to the recommended 270mm.
Can I store things in a loft with trussed rafters?
Yes, within limits. Trussed rafters are engineered for set loads, so light storage on a properly built platform is fine, but heavy items should be avoided. We position boarding where it suits the truss layout and raise it so the insulation beneath is not compressed.
We have spray foam and want to move. Should we remove it first?
It is worth getting it inspected before you market the house. Some buyers' surveyors and lenders are wary of spray foam, which can delay a sale. Removing it and re-insulating at the joists gives buyers a clear, conventional loft, and we provide written details of the work.
Our extension has its own small roof. Is that included?
If there is a way in, we include it. Extensions added to Llanishen homes in later years sometimes have a shallow void with no hatch, or a flat roof with no void at all. We check how each part of the roof was built and tell you honestly what can and cannot be improved from inside.
