Loft Insulation in Canton

Most of the lofts we open up in Canton belong to terraced houses built between the 1880s and the First World War, and a lot of them are still sitting on whatever insulation went down decades ago. Loft insulation in Canton is usually a straightforward one-day job, but these roofs have quirks worth knowing about before anyone climbs through the hatch.

Our Cardiff team covers every street from Cowbridge Road East up to Victoria Park and across towards Leckwith. We survey for free, explain what we find in plain terms and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours. You can book a survey online or ring us.

Canton's terraces and what sits above them

The bulk of Canton is long rows of two-storey Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many with a bay at the front and a narrower back extension running down the garden. That back section normally has its own small, low roof void, separate from the main loft, and it is often the coldest part of the house because nobody has ever insulated it.

The main lofts are modest in size, with slate roofs laid straight onto battens and no underlay in many cases. That keeps them well ventilated but also lets wind blow across the top of thin insulation and strip its warmth away. Ceilings below are frequently original lath and plaster, so we work from crawl boards and never step between joists. Where we find old, compressed fibreglass we top it up to 270mm with Knauf Earthwool, laid in two layers across and between the joists so there are no gaps for heat to escape through.

Closer to Pontcanna and Llandaff Fields the houses get a little larger and some have converted attics, which change the approach completely.

What Canton homes usually need

Working on Canton streets

Parking can be tight on the residential streets off Cowbridge Road East, so we plan deliveries of loft roll for earlier in the day and keep the van loading quick. Most hatches here are small, which is fine for rolled insulation but matters if you want boards or a ladder fitted; we measure on the survey and can widen a hatch where the joists allow.

Party walls in older terraces sometimes stop short of the roof, leaving a gap through to next door. We point this out rather than ignore it, because it affects both heat loss and pest access. Our guide on how much loft insulation you need explains the depths we work to, and if you want to store things up there, read about raised loft boarding first.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Canton: FAQs

My Canton house has a back extension. Does that need insulating too?

Yes, and it is often missed. The rear section of a Victorian terrace usually has a separate shallow roof void with its own access, or none at all. If we can reach it safely we insulate it at the same visit. If there is no access, we will tell you honestly what the options are rather than cutting holes in ceilings without a clear reason.

Is it safe to insulate over old lath and plaster ceilings?

It is, provided the work is done carefully. Mineral wool is light, so it adds very little load. The risk comes from people kneeling or stepping between joists, which can crack the plaster keys. We use crawl boards throughout, keep weight on the joists and check the ceilings below before and after.

Can you insulate if my loft is open to next door's?

We can insulate your side, but we will flag the gap because heat and mice both travel through it. Closing up a party wall is a building matter that may need agreement with your neighbour, so we explain what we have found and leave that decision with you.
