Loft Insulation in Blackwood
We install loft insulation in Blackwood and the villages around it, from Pontllanfraith and Cefn Fforest up to Oakdale. Our team comes up from Cardiff, usually via the A467 and the Sirhowy Enterprise Way, so a visit to NP12 is a straightforward trip for us.
Blackwood sits in the middle of the Sirhowy Valley, and the hillside streets here take a lot of rain blown up the valley. That shapes what a loft needs. On a free survey we check how much insulation is already there, whether the roof is letting in damp, and what the space is used for, then send a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Valley terraces, post-war estates and newer housing
Blackwood began in the early 1800s as a colliery settlement and grew with coal mining through the Victorian era. The oldest housing is the long rows of stone and brick terraces stepped along the valley sides, many with slate roofs, small lofts and a chimney breast taking up part of the roof space. In these houses the loft is often shallow at the front and back eaves, which makes reaching the edges awkward and is exactly where thin old insulation tends to stop short.
Through the twentieth century the town spread out with council and private estates of semis and short terraces, and later with bungalows and cul-de-sac housing on the flatter ground around the town. These have trussed or simple pitched roofs that are easy to work in, but the insulation laid when they were built is usually well below today's recommended 270mm, and much of it has been disturbed by years of storage, aerials and new wiring.
In both cases, the job usually comes down to clearing or levelling what is there, filling the gaps at the eaves and around the hatch, and laying a fresh layer of mineral wool across the joists to bring the whole floor up to depth.
What Blackwood homes usually need

Loft Insulation in Blackwood
Most Blackwood terraces and estate semis have a thin, patchy layer from decades ago, and a proper top-up to 270mm of Knauf Earthwool is the simplest way to stop heat escaping through the top floor ceiling.

Loft Mould Treatment in Blackwood
Wet weather funnelled up the Sirhowy Valley finds its way into older roofs, so we look for mould on rafters and sarking, treat it, and deal with the ventilation problem behind it.

Loft Boarding in Blackwood
Estate semis and bungalows often have usable roof space, and raised boarding lets families store things up there without flattening the new insulation.
Practical notes for Blackwood homes
Many terraced streets on the valley sides are steep and narrow, with on-street parking only. When we book in, we ask where the van can stop so materials can be carried in without blocking the road for long. Older terraces sometimes share a roof void with next door through gaps in the party wall, which we check because it can affect draughts and how vermin move between houses.
Where a roof has no felt or the felt has perished, rain and cold air can reach the insulation, so we keep an eye on the condition of the slates from inside. Loft insulation in Blackwood: FAQs
Do you cover Pontllanfraith, Cefn Fforest and Oakdale as well as Blackwood?
Yes. We treat Blackwood and the villages around it as one area, so Pontllanfraith, Cefn Fforest, Oakdale and the surrounding NP12 streets are all covered. Our team travels up from Cardiff, and we arrange survey times that suit you, including weekends, as we work every day from 8am to 6pm.
My terraced house in Blackwood has a very low loft. Can it still be insulated?
Usually, yes. Low valley-terrace lofts are tight to work in, especially near the eaves, but mineral wool roll can be pushed into those edges with the right tools. We lay crawl boards to move about safely. If the space is too shallow in places to reach, we'll tell you on the survey and explain what we can do instead.
Will insulating the loft make my Blackwood house damp?
Not if it is done properly. A fully insulated loft gets colder, so it relies on airflow at the eaves to carry moisture away. We keep those ventilation gaps clear and check for existing condensation or mould before we start. In wet valley areas that check matters, and we'll point out anything that should be fixed first.
