Loft Insulation in Chepstow
Chepstow is a border town of steep streets, old stone buildings and housing that dates from almost every century since the castle went up. We carry out loft insulation in Chepstow and across NP16, heading east from Cardiff along the M4 and M48 for surveys and installs.
The survey costs nothing and commits you to nothing. We check the condition of the roof space, existing insulation, ventilation and anything sharing the loft with you, then send a written quote, normally inside 24 hours.

Georgian streets, shipyard housing and newer estates
The historic centre runs downhill from the Port Wall to the River Wye, and many of its houses date from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These have irregular roofs, thick stone walls, lath-and-plaster ceilings and lofts that may have been altered several times. Low eaves and heavy timbers make good coverage harder, and some owners would rather keep the roof space usable than fill it.
During the First World War, the National Shipyard brought a wave of new housing at Hardwick, known locally as Garden City, and at Bulwark. Those early twentieth-century homes, together with the post-war houses that followed, have simple pitched roofs that respond well to a proper top-up. Chepstow has also grown with later estates on the edges of town, where trussed roofs are the norm.
What Chepstow homes usually need

SuperFOIL Insulation in Chepstow
In the town's older houses with low eaves and roof space worth using, multifoil fixed to the rafters keeps the room warm while avoiding fragile ceilings.

Loft Insulation in Chepstow
The Garden City and Bulwark houses have plain, open lofts that suit a full depth of Knauf Earthwool laid across and between the joists.

Rodent Proofing in Chepstow
Old stone buildings close to the river and open countryside give rats and mice plenty of entry points, which we find and seal.
Working around Chepstow's old town
Much of central Chepstow lies within a conservation area and there are many listed buildings, so for anything beyond laying insulation inside the loft we suggest checking with Monmouthshire County Council first. Work on listed houses can need consent even when it is internal. Streets near the town gate and down towards the bridge are narrow and steep, which affects where the van can stop.
Riverside damp and older roofs without underlay mean we pay close attention to ventilation and timbers. If you are deciding how to insulate a partly used roof, compare the options in our SuperFOIL vs mineral wool guide, or see how our rodent proofing service works.
Loft insulation in Chepstow: FAQs
My Chepstow house is listed. Can I still insulate the loft?
Usually, but listed building consent may be needed for some work, even inside the roof, because it can affect historic fabric. Laying breathable mineral wool between joists is often acceptable, while fixing materials to old rafters may need agreement. Check with Monmouthshire's conservation officer, and we will give you a clear description of the proposed work to share with them.
Are the Garden City houses easy to insulate?
Generally, yes. The houses built at Hardwick for shipyard workers have relatively simple roofs and decent access. The usual job is lifting or topping up old, thin insulation, lagging pipes and tanks, and insulating and draught-sealing the hatch. Most are completed within a day.
We hear scratching in the loft at night. What should we do?
Scratching after dark usually points to mice or rats. Look for droppings, chewed cables and tunnels in the insulation. We inspect the loft and eaves, seal gaps with mesh and appropriate materials, and replace contaminated insulation. Clearing the loft without blocking entry points only buys a little time, so the sealing is the important part.
Do Chepstow's older roofs need ventilation when you insulate?
Yes. Many period roofs in the town have no underlay, or have old bitumen felt, and rely on air moving through the slates and eaves to stay dry. When we add insulation we stop it short of the eaves or fit trays so that air path stays open. Blocking it is one of the most common causes of loft condensation we come across.
