Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan

Loft Insulation in Cowbridge

We fit loft insulation in Cowbridge and the surrounding Vale of Glamorgan villages across CF71. The town is a pleasant drive west along the A48 from Cardiff, and we're happy to travel out to farmhouses and outlying homes too.

Cowbridge has a lot of older property, and insulating period stone buildings needs more thought than a modern semi. We look carefully at ventilation and the condition of the timbers so the roof keeps breathing, and we explain each recommendation before you commit to anything.

Stone cottages, period town houses and rural homes

The centre of Cowbridge is a historic market town, with a conservation area along the High Street and many older buildings, some of them listed. Behind the frontages and in the lanes nearby are stone cottages and town houses with irregular roof structures, solid walls built with lime mortar, and lofts that may have been altered several times over the years.

Beyond the centre there are later twentieth-century homes and newer developments, and out in the surrounding countryside, farmhouses, converted barns and detached rural houses. Older stone buildings depend on air moving through them to stay dry, so we choose and fit insulation in a way that keeps that airflow. Rural lofts also tend to see more visitors from fields and hedgerows.

What Cowbridge homes usually need

Conservation, listed buildings and rural access

Insulating inside an ordinary loft rarely needs permission, but if your Cowbridge home is listed, check with the Vale of Glamorgan Council before work starts. We can describe exactly what we'd do so you can ask the right questions.

Some farmhouses and rural homes have long drives or narrow lane access, which is no problem for our team as long as we know in advance. If you've heard scratching overhead, see our rodent proofing service, or read our comparison of SuperFOIL and mineral wool to see which suits an older roof.

Plenty of rural homes around Cowbridge also have larger, older roofs with more than one loft space, or a loft above an extension with its own small hatch. We survey every section rather than quoting for the main loft alone, so nothing gets missed.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Cowbridge: FAQs

Is mineral wool suitable for an old stone cottage in Cowbridge?

Yes, when it's fitted properly. Mineral wool is vapour-open, so it lets moisture pass through rather than trapping it, which suits older solid-walled buildings. The key is not stuffing it into the eaves, where it would block the airflow the roof relies on. We check ventilation on every older property and fit eaves vents if they're needed.

Do I need consent to insulate a listed building's loft?

Possibly. Listed building consent can apply to internal works as well as external ones, depending on what's being changed. Simply laying insulation between joists is often minor, but you should confirm with the Vale of Glamorgan Council's conservation team before any work. We can give you a written description of the proposed work to help with that conversation.

Do you travel to farms and villages outside Cowbridge?

Yes. We cover Cowbridge and the surrounding Vale villages and countryside in the CF71 area. Rural properties are no trouble; just mention any long drives, gates or narrow lanes when you book so we can plan the van and timings. Surveys are free and there's no obligation.

Can you get rid of mice in a rural loft for good?

We can make the loft much harder to get into. That means finding and sealing entry points at the eaves, around pipes and under roof edges with mesh and suitable fillers, then removing and replacing soiled insulation. Rural homes will always have rodents nearby, so we'll also point out any spots outside, such as climbing plants, that give them an easy route up.
