Loft Insulation in Gorseinon

Gorseinon grew from a small village into a sizeable town on the back of coal and tinplate in the late Victorian years, and its terraces still show it. Today the town runs into Loughor, Penyrheol and Penllergaer, with post-war estates and newer housing alongside the older streets. Loft insulation in Gorseinon has to suit all of these, and the damp air off the Loughor estuary is part of the picture.

We drive from Cardiff along the M4 to junction 47 at Penllergaer and plan Gorseinon visits ahead of time. The survey is free, we check ventilation and timbers as well as insulation depth, and you'll get a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Tinplate-era terraces and post-war estates

Much of the town's older housing went up from the 1880s onwards as the tinplate and steelworks at Grovesend, and later the Bryngwyn sheetworks, drew in workers. These are mostly terraces, with modest lofts, old timbers and roofs open to weather blowing in from the west. Insulation in them is often thin and patchy, and some have had foam sprayed under the slates in an attempt to stop draughts.

Through the twentieth century, estates of semis and terraces filled the land between Gorseinon, Loughor and Penyrheol, and more recent developments have added modern homes on the edges. Those lofts are simpler and well suited to storage once the insulation underneath is brought up to depth.

What Gorseinon homes usually need

Estuary weather and working in Gorseinon

The Loughor estuary opens onto Carmarthen Bay, so rain and wind arrive from the west with little to slow them down. That makes ventilation at the eaves important, especially in older terraces with no roofing felt. If your loft smells musty or the timbers look stained, read about how we treat loft mould.

Parking on the older terraced streets close to the town centre can be tight, so we'll talk through access when we book. For older roofs that have been sprayed, our spray foam guide explains why removal is often the better long-term choice. Homes on the newer estates are usually simpler, and many need little more than a top-up and some properly raised storage.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Gorseinon: FAQs

Why does my Gorseinon loft smell damp?

A musty smell usually means moisture is building up and not escaping. In Gorseinon, the common causes are wind-driven rain getting under old slates, blocked eaves and warm air from bathrooms rising into a cold roof. We look for staining, mould and wet insulation during the survey, then treat what's there and fix the ventilation behind it.

Can you remove spray foam from a terrace in Gorseinon?

Yes. We remove the foam from the rafters and slates, clean the timbers and check them for any rot the foam may have been hiding. Then we insulate the loft floor with mineral wool, leaving air paths at the eaves. Because the amount of foam and the access vary so much, removal is priced after a survey.

Do you work in Loughor, Penyrheol and Penllergaer?

Yes. Gorseinon, Loughor, Penyrheol, Garden Village and Penllergaer form one built-up area, and we cover all of them, as well as nearby Gowerton and Pontarddulais. We plan visits from Cardiff in advance and give a written quote, usually within 24 hours of the free survey.

Should I board my loft before or after insulating?

After, and on raised legs. If boards go straight onto the joists, there's only room for the depth of the joist below, and anything thicker gets squashed. We insulate to the recommended depth first, then fit boards on loft legs above it, so you keep both the storage and the warmth.
