Loft Insulation in Grangetown
Grangetown is largely made up of Victorian terraced streets between the River Taff and the railway, with Grange Gardens at its heart. If you live in one of those terraces, loft insulation in Grangetown is mostly about filling a compact roof space properly and dealing with the dampness that older houses near a river can carry.
We're a Cardiff team covering CF11, and every quote follows a free survey, so we see the condition of your loft before recommending anything.

Grangetown's Victorian housing
Most of Grangetown was built in the late nineteenth century as the docks expanded, and the bulk of homes are two-storey terraces, many with bay windows and a rear outshoot. Lofts are compact, under slate or replacement tile roofs, with a hatch on the landing or in a bedroom ceiling.
Because these houses are well over a century old, their lofts have usually seen several rounds of work: rewiring, new roof coverings, water tanks removed when combi boilers went in. Insulation is often patchy as a result, with bare sections where it was pulled back and never replaced.
The streets nearest the Taff Embankment are low-lying, and older houses without modern damp-proofing hold more moisture. Some of it ends up in the loft as condensation, especially where bathroom fans have been ducted into the roof space instead of outside.

Long, connected terraces close to the river give mice and rats easy routes between houses. We seal the gaps on your side and clean up after them.
Local tips for Grangetown homeowners
Before insulating, it's worth checking where your bathroom and kitchen extractor fans actually discharge. If they duct into the loft rather than through the roof or wall, adding insulation without fixing that can make condensation worse, so we look for it on every survey in the area.
Our guide to loft condensation and mould explains how warm air and cold timbers cause problems, and the loft mould treatment page sets out how we deal with it.
Some Grangetown terraces are let or split into flats. If you're a landlord, a single survey can cover the whole building, and we'll explain what's practical for each roof space and who needs to agree to the work.
Loft insulation in Grangetown: FAQs
Will insulating my Grangetown loft make condensation worse?
Not if it's done properly. Insulation keeps heat in the house, which makes the loft colder, so moist air that reaches it is more likely to condense. The answer is to stop moist air getting up there and keep the loft ventilated: sealing around the hatch, venting fans outside and keeping the eaves clear. We build those checks into the job.
The insulation in my loft has big gaps after a rewire. Can you just fill those?
We can, but it's worth measuring the rest at the same time. If the existing layer is thin, filling the gaps alone leaves the loft below the recommended 270mm. Often the best value is to fill the gaps and lay a top-up layer across the whole loft in the same visit.
Is there anything different about lofts in houses near the river?
The main difference is moisture. Low-lying older terraces near the Taff can be more prone to damp, and some of that moisture travels up into the loft. It doesn't stop you insulating, but ventilation and any existing mould need dealing with first. We check timber condition and airflow on the survey before recommending anything.
My Grangetown terrace still has a water tank in the loft. Does that change anything?
A little. Insulation shouldn't go directly under a cold water tank, because some warmth rising from below helps stop it freezing. Instead, the tank and its pipes get an insulating jacket and lagging, and the area beneath is left clear. If the tank is no longer used after a boiler change, it may be worth having it removed before insulating.
