Loft Insulation in Heath
Heath is one of the quieter, leafier parts of north Cardiff, and a large share of its homes are the solid, bay-fronted semis that went up between the wars. Those houses have roomy lofts that can be properly insulated and still used for storage, which makes loft insulation in Heath one of the more satisfying jobs we do.
Our team covers the whole area, from the streets around the University Hospital of Wales to the edges of Birchgrove and Llanishen. The survey is free, the quote usually reaches you within 24 hours, and the work itself is rarely more than a day.

Interwar semis with hipped roofs
The typical Heath home is a 1920s or 1930s semi with a hipped roof sloping down on three sides, a front bay and a back garden of decent size. There are also streets of earlier terraces and later infill from the post-war decades, but the interwar semi is what defines much of the area.
Hipped roofs give a loft with a good central area of headroom but tight, low corners where the roof slopes meet the ceiling. Those corners are exactly where insulation is often thin or missing, because they are awkward to reach. We work right into them and keep the eaves ventilation clear at the same time.
Many of these lofts were insulated once, perhaps in the 1980s, with a layer that seemed generous then and falls well short of 270mm now. Old cold-water tanks, sometimes redundant since a combi boiler went in, often take up room as well. We can talk through whether a disused tank is worth taking out to free up space for boarding.
What Heath homes usually need

Loft Insulation in Heath
Heath's interwar lofts usually have an older layer that just needs topping up to 270mm, worked carefully into the low hipped corners.

Loft Boarding in Heath
The central area of a hipped loft is perfect for a raised storage deck that sits above the insulation instead of squashing it.

Loft Ladders in Heath
With a usable loft overhead, many Heath owners add an aluminium folding ladder so the space actually gets used.
Getting the most from a Heath loft
Families in Heath often want the loft to do two jobs: keep the house warm and hold years of belongings. The mistake we see most is chipboard laid straight on the joists, which crushes whatever insulation is underneath and cuts its effect sharply. Raised boarding avoids that, and our guide to boarding a loft without crushing insulation explains how.
Streets close to the hospital can be busy with visitor and staff parking during the day, so we let you know our arrival time in advance. If a ladder is on your list, see how to choose a loft ladder before your survey.
Loft insulation in Heath: FAQs
Can you board the whole loft in my 1930s semi?
Usually not the whole floor, and we would not advise it. The low edges of a hipped roof are best left for insulation and ventilation. The central section with good headroom is where boarding makes sense, raised on loft legs so the full depth of insulation fits beneath. We size the deck to what you actually need to store.
We have an old water tank we no longer use. Can it go?
If the tank is genuinely redundant, for example after a combi boiler was fitted, removing it can free up useful space. It must be drained and disconnected first, which may need a plumber. We can confirm on the survey whether it appears to be in use and plan around it.
My loft already has insulation. Is a top-up worthwhile?
If it is well below 270mm or has been flattened over the years, yes. Many Heath lofts have a single older layer laid between the joists. Adding a second layer across the joists covers the timbers, closes the gaps and brings the total depth up to the recommended level.
Will you need to come into the house much?
Only to reach the hatch. We lay dust sheets on the stairs and landing, carry the rolls straight up into the loft and work from there. Once we have finished, we vacuum the landing, check the hatch closes and seals properly, and talk you through the finished loft if you would rather not climb up yourself.
