Loft Insulation in Porth

Porth sits where the Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach meet, and its homes reflect that history: long terraces climbing the valley sides, built for the families who worked the pits. Loft insulation in Porth means dealing with old roofs, steep streets and some of the wettest weather in Wales.

Our team comes up from Cardiff on the A470 and the A4058 through Trehafod. We survey the loft, tell you plainly what's there and what isn't, and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours. Most jobs are finished in a day.

Porth's terraces and what we find in their lofts

Most of Porth's housing went up in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the coal industry boomed. The typical house is a two-storey terrace in local Pennant sandstone, often stepped down a hillside so each roof sits a little lower than the one next door. Roofs are Welsh slate or later replacement tiles, and many of the older ones have no felt or membrane underneath.

The lofts tend to be modest, with a small hatch and a low ridge. Some have nothing in them at all; others have a thin layer of old fibreglass, sometimes buried under dust and debris from roof repairs over the years. Party walls between houses don't always reach right up to the slates, leaving gaps from one loft into the next.

That last point matters more than people expect, because a gap in a party wall is a route for mice and rats to travel along a whole row.

What Porth homes usually need

Working on Porth's steep streets

Parking on Porth's terraced streets is usually on-street and on a slope, so we plan where the van goes and carry materials in by hand. Loft roll is light and compressed, which suits narrow hallways and small hatches. We keep the eaves clear for airflow, because a terrace roof in a wet valley needs to breathe.

If you've heard scratching overhead, our guide on signs of rodents in the loft tells you what to look for, and the rodent proofing service page explains how we deal with it.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Porth: FAQs

Mice keep coming back into our Porth terrace loft. Why?

In older terraces, mice often travel between houses through gaps in the party walls, around pipes and at the eaves. Clearing them from one loft doesn't stop more arriving from along the row. We look for entry points inside your loft, seal what we can reach with mesh and suitable fillers, and replace any insulation that's been soiled. Neighbours dealing with theirs at the same time helps a great deal.

My roof has no felt under the slates. Can you still insulate?

Yes. Plenty of older Porth roofs were built without any underlay. We insulate at ceiling level with mineral wool, which lets moisture move rather than trapping it, and we keep a ventilation gap at the eaves. We'll also point out any slipped slates or daylight showing through, because a roof repair may be worth doing first.

Is the drive from Cardiff a problem for a job in Porth?

Not at all. Our team travels up from Cardiff via Pontypridd, and Porth is an easy run along the valley road. We agree a time for the survey, then book the installation once you're happy with the quote. Most terraced lofts are completed in a single day.

How do you get materials into a terrace with no rear access?

We bring everything through the front door. Mineral wool rolls are compressed and light, so they carry easily up a narrow staircase. We put dust sheets down on the stairs and landing, and we clear away offcuts and packaging at the end of the day.
