Loft Boarding in Cyncoed
Cyncoed lofts are often large enough for a proper storage deck. We raise the boards on loft legs so the full 270mm of insulation sits underneath and you get a solid floor on top.

Cyncoed, Cardiff
Cyncoed is mostly made up of larger family homes, and larger homes usually mean larger lofts: more space to insulate properly, and more space worth using. Our Cardiff team carries out loft insulation in Cyncoed across CF23, from the roads near Roath Park Lake up to Cyncoed Road and the later estates beyond.
Many lofts here were insulated once, decades ago, and then filled with boxes. The insulation ends up flattened, patchy at the edges and well short of the 270mm now recommended. Putting that right, and giving you somewhere sensible to store things, is usually a one-day job.
Much of Cyncoed was built between the wars and in the decades after, with detached houses and generous semis set back on wide plots. A lot of them have hipped roofs, where the roof slopes down on three or four sides. That gives a good central area with full standing height, but the space tapers sharply towards the hips, and those far corners are exactly where old insulation tends to stop short.
Post-war and 1960s–70s detached houses in the area often have traditional cut timber roofs with purlins and struts, which take raised boarding well. Extensions are common too: a single-storey kitchen or a converted garage usually has its own shallow roof with little or no access, so it's worth knowing how that part was insulated when it was built.
Because the lofts are big, they get used. Christmas decorations, spare furniture, suitcases: every box resting directly on mineral wool squashes it and cuts how well it works.

A big loft is only useful if getting into it is safe. A fitted aluminium ladder, with the hatch enlarged where needed, replaces balancing on a stepladder.

If you're planning to board, do the insulation and boarding together so the deck sits at the right height above the new depth. Our guide to boarding a loft without crushing the insulation explains how raised boarding works, and choosing a loft ladder covers hatch sizes and ladder types.
Yes, though the usable area is mostly the central section where the roof is highest. Towards the hips the space gets too low to stand or store much, so we normally board the middle and make sure the tapered edges are fully insulated instead. We'll show you on the survey how much floor you can realistically expect.
Only as much as you'll actually use. Boarding the whole loft costs more and isn't needed if half of it sits under low eaves. A common approach in bigger Cyncoed homes is a generous storage area around the hatch and a walkway to the water tank, with the rest left as fully insulated, unboarded space.
Usually, yes. Fitting the ladder, any hatch enlargement and the boarding in one visit keeps disruption down, and it means the boarded area can be planned around where the ladder lands. Ladder prices depend on your ceiling height and hatch size, so we confirm the cost after the survey rather than guessing over the phone.
Raising the boards does lift the floor, typically by around 300mm once the legs clear 270mm of insulation. In most Cyncoed lofts the central area has enough height for that to be a non-issue. Near the eaves and hips the clearance disappears quickly, which is another reason we keep boarding to the middle of the roof.
