Penylan, Cardiff
Penylan sits on the slope above Roath, and its housing changes as you climb: substantial Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas lower down towards Roath Park, then interwar semis and later houses further up the hill. Each era has its own kind of roof, so loft insulation in Penylan is rarely one-size-fits-all.
We're a local Cardiff team and we survey every loft before quoting. That matters in period homes, where the roof timbers, the ventilation and whatever previous owners did up there all affect what's sensible.
The older houses around Penylan Road and towards the park tend to be tall, with steep slate roofs and good headroom. Many have had some form of loft use over the years: a storage floor, an informal hobby room, occasionally a full conversion. Where the space is used, laying thick mineral wool between the joists gets in the way, so insulating at the rafters with a multifoil can make more sense.
Older slate roofs often have no membrane underneath, just slates on battens, sometimes with traces of old mortar torching. That lets the roof breathe, which is good for the timbers, but it also means draughts and some wind-blown moisture. Insulating these lofts needs care at the eaves so the airflow that keeps everything dry isn't blocked.
Higher up the hill, the interwar semis are a simpler job: a standard joist-level loft that usually needs topping up to 270mm, plus attention around the water tank and pipework.

For the interwar semis further up the hill, a top-up with Knauf Earthwool to 270mm is normally the right answer.

Older roofs where the eaves have been stuffed with insulation can develop condensation and mould on the timbers. We treat it and reopen the airflow.
View serviceParts of the area around Roath Park fall within a conservation area, but insulating and boarding a loft is internal work, so nothing changes how the house looks from the street. If you're planning anything that alters the roof itself, such as rooflights, check with Cardiff Council's planning team first.
Parking on the terraced streets near the park can be tight, so we time arrivals and bring materials in efficiently. If you're weighing up foil against wool, our comparison of SuperFOIL and mineral wool sets out the trade-offs, and the loft condensation and mould guide explains why ventilation matters so much in older roofs.
Yes. Unfelted roofs are common in Cardiff's older houses. The key is to keep air moving at the eaves and not pack insulation hard against the underside of the slates. At joist level that means leaving a ventilation gap at the edges; at rafter level we fit SuperFOIL with the right air gaps. We check the roof's condition on the survey and tell you if anything needs a roofer first.
It depends on how you use the loft. If it's an empty void, mineral wool at 270mm between and over the joists is effective and good value. If you store things up there, or want to keep the option of using the space, SuperFOIL on the rafters keeps the floor free. Some Penylan homes end up with a combination of the two.
Insulating inside the loft is internal work and doesn't normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area, because nothing changes externally. Listed buildings are different and should be checked with the council before any work. If your plans include rooflights or other changes to the roof, speak to Cardiff Council before starting.
Yes. Informal conversions often have a boarded floor with little or nothing beneath it, and panelling on the slopes with no insulation behind. We look at which parts can be reached. Unboarded sections can take mineral wool, and accessible rafter areas can take SuperFOIL. If a proper conversion is planned, building regulations will apply and that's a separate project.
