Fairwater, Cardiff
Fairwater sits on the western side of Cardiff between Llandaff and St Fagans, and its housing is a broad mix: interwar semis on the older roads, large post-war council and private estates, and later infill. Loft insulation in Fairwater covers all of these, so the right approach depends on which part of the area you live in.
We're a local Cardiff team, and every Fairwater job starts with a free survey. Most standard loft work is then finished in a single day.
A large share of Fairwater was built after the Second World War, with estate semis and terraces, some council-built and many now privately owned. These usually have simple pitched roofs with clear lofts and enough room to store things, which makes them good candidates for raised boarding once the insulation is up to depth.
Houses from the 1960s and 1970s often had their first insulation fitted in the years that followed, typically a thin roll that has since compressed. Older semis towards Llandaff can have slightly larger lofts with cut timber roofs and more headroom.
Spray foam is worth checking for in a house of any age. It changes the whole approach to the job, so it's one of the first things we look at on a survey. If it's there, we'll explain the removal process and price it separately from the insulation, so you can see exactly where the cost lies.

Post-war estate lofts usually have room for storage, and raised boards keep that storage off the insulation.

If foam has been sprayed onto your roof, we take it off, clean the timbers and re-insulate at joist level.
View serviceAccess is usually straightforward, and we'll confirm parking when we book. If you plan to store things in the loft afterwards, decide before the work so we can fit the insulation and boarding in one visit rather than two.

Some Fairwater homes have had loft conversions or dormers added over the years. In those, the remaining roof space is often split into smaller voids at the sides and above the new room, and each one needs insulating separately. We map these out on the survey so nothing is missed.
Most post-war houses here have a simple pitched roof with clear space in the middle, which suits a raised boarded area. Headroom is the main factor: with 270mm of insulation plus the legs and boards, the floor rises, so we check there's still usable height above it. We'll measure on the survey and suggest a sensible board area.
Not necessarily replacing, but almost certainly topping up. Insulation from that period was usually thin by today's standards and has had decades to settle. If it's dry and clean it can stay where it is, and a new layer goes over the top to reach the recommended depth.
Yes, in two stages. The foam is removed and the timbers cleaned first, then the loft is insulated at joist level and boarded on raised legs. Depending on how much foam there is, this can take more than a day. We'll give you a realistic timeline after the survey.
Yes. Mineral wool needs no drying or curing time, and raised boarding can take storage as soon as it's fixed down. We clear away offcuts and packaging before we leave, so you can start putting things back up the same evening. Where spray foam has been removed, the loft is also left clean with the timbers exposed for inspection.
