Loft Insulation in Maesteg

We install loft insulation in Maesteg and right up the Llynfi Valley to Nantyffyllon and Caerau. From Cardiff we head west on the M4, come off at Sarn and follow the A4063 up the valley.

Maesteg sits at the top end of a long, enclosed valley, and its weather shows it: frequent heavy rain, low cloud and cold, damp winters. Insulating a loft here means getting the depth right while keeping the roof dry and ventilated. We assess both on a free survey and send you a clear written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Long terraces on the valley floor and slopes

Maesteg was an iron and coal town, and its streets are dominated by terraces built for that workforce in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They run in long, unbroken rows along the valley floor and up the sides, with Caerau and Nantyffyllon continuing the pattern further north. The lofts are usually shallow, with a low pitch that leaves little height at the eaves.

In many older terraces the dividing walls between houses do not run fully up to the roof, so the loft spaces are partly open to the neighbours on either side. Heat drifts along the row, and so do mice. It also means your insulation work stops at a boundary that is not always obvious.

There is also post-war council housing and later private building around the town, generally with deeper, easier lofts. Across all of it, the main threats are the same: damp, condensation and old insulation that has slumped to nothing.

What Maesteg homes usually need

SuperFOIL multifoil fitted and taped across the rafters of a loft with a brick gable wall, installed by our Cardiff team

SuperFOIL Insulation in Maesteg

Where a low-pitched Maesteg terrace leaves no room for deep wool at the eaves, SuperFOIL fixed to the rafters adds insulation without blocking the airflow.

Loft Mould Treatment in Maesteg

Some of the wettest weather in South Wales and cold, shaded roof slopes mean we often find mould on timbers here, and we fix the ventilation as well as treating it.

Rodent Proofing in Maesteg

When terrace lofts are open to the houses next door, mice can travel the length of the row, so we close off gaps and entry points around your part of the roof.

What to expect on a Maesteg job

Front parking on the older terraces is limited, and many houses have a back lane, so tell us which side is easier when you book. We check the party walls in the loft and will point out any gaps between you and your neighbours.

If your loft is too shallow for a full depth of mineral wool, the SuperFOIL insulation service page explains how multifoil works on the rafters. You can also compare the two in our SuperFOIL vs mineral wool guide before we visit.

Loft insulation in Maesteg: FAQs

The loft in my Maesteg terrace seems to join onto next door's. Is that a problem?

It is common in older terraces, where party walls were not always built right up to the roof. It lets heat and noise pass between houses and gives mice an easy route along the row. We can insulate your side fully and seal the obvious gaps. Rebuilding a missing section of party wall is building work, and we will tell you if it is needed.

Is SuperFOIL better than mineral wool for a valley terrace?

Neither is better everywhere. Mineral wool laid on the loft floor is very effective and usually cheaper where there is space. SuperFOIL is fitted to the rafters, so it suits shallow roofs, lofts used for storage, or awkward spaces where wool cannot be laid properly without blocking ventilation. We recommend one or a combination after seeing your loft.

Will insulating my loft cause condensation?

It can if the job is done badly. A well-insulated loft floor makes the roof space colder, so any moist air getting in from below is more likely to condense. That is why we keep the eaves ventilation clear, seal gaps around the hatch and pipes, and check bathroom fans are not venting into the loft.

Do you go further up the valley to Caerau and Nantyffyllon?

Yes. We cover the whole Llynfi Valley within CF34, from the lower end of Maesteg up to Caerau. The terraces up there are very similar to those in town, with the same shallow lofts and wet weather, so the same checks apply. We come up from Cardiff via Sarn, and we will agree a survey date that suits you.
