Loft Insulation in Rumney

Rumney runs along Newport Road on the eastern side of the Rhymney River, climbing up Rumney Hill out of the city. Much of its housing is interwar and post-war: solid semis and short terraces with plain, practical roofs. Loft insulation in Rumney is usually straightforward, but it pays to check what earlier installers left behind.

Houses of this age have been through several rounds of improvement, and the loft often shows it: layers of different insulation, old boards laid straight onto the joists and, now and then, sprayed foam on the underside of the roof. Our Cardiff team surveys first so the quote reflects what's really up there.

Rumney's interwar and post-war houses

The 1930s semis here typically have hipped or gable-ended roofs with cut timbers, a central purlin and reasonable headroom in the middle. They were built with no loft insulation at all, so what you find now is whatever was added later, often a thin early layer with a newer roll laid over only part of the loft.

Post-war council-built homes in and around Rumney, many now privately owned, tend to have lower, simpler roofs. Their lofts are smaller but quick to bring up to 270mm.

Spray foam is the issue to watch for. Some older roofs have had polyurethane foam sprayed onto the underside of the tiles or slates, usually sold as a fix for slipping tiles or as an insulation upgrade. It can trap moisture against the timbers, and some lenders and surveyors now flag it when a house is sold or remortgaged.

Before we start on a Rumney loft

Some homes on the hillier streets have steps up from the pavement, so we carry materials in by hand and protect the route through the house. On busier roads such as Newport Road, we agree where the van will stop when we confirm your booking.

If you've been told your roof has spray foam, our spray foam removal guide explains why it's often taken out and what's involved, and the spray foam removal service page covers how we do it.

Loft insulation in Rumney: FAQs

How do I know if my Rumney home has spray foam in the loft?

Look at the underside of the roof between the rafters. Spray foam is a thick, lumpy layer, usually cream, yellow or grey, stuck directly to the tiles or membrane, and it's easy to spot with a torch. If you're not sure, we can identify it on the survey and tell you if it covers the whole roof or only sections of it.

There are several layers of old insulation up there. Do you remove them first?

Usually not. Old mineral wool that's dry and clean can stay in place, and we lay new insulation over it to reach the right overall depth. We do remove anything damp, mouldy, soiled by rodents or so compressed it's doing very little. The survey gives you a clear explanation of what stays and what goes.

Will spray foam affect selling my house?

It can. Some mortgage lenders and surveyors are cautious about sprayed foam because it hides the condition of the roof timbers and can trap moisture, and that has led some sellers to have it removed before marketing their home. We can't advise on your mortgage, but we can remove the foam so the roof can be inspected properly.

How long does a Rumney loft job take?

A standard top-up in a semi or terrace is usually done in a single day, sometimes in less. Spray foam removal takes longer, because the foam has to be cut away, bagged and taken off site before the timbers are cleaned and the loft re-insulated. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote.
