What we found
This older loft had a generous floor area and good headroom, but nothing to stand on. Older cut roofs like this often have more open space than modern trussed lofts, which makes them ideal for storage once there's a proper floor.
What we did
- Boarded the loft out wall to wall in OSB, working around the roof timbers and braces.
- Kept the insulation in place under the boards, so the rooms below stay warm.
- Fitted the boards tight around the timbers and up to the gable wall for a clean, solid floor.
- Boarded a section next to the hatch in chipboard for easy access from the ladder.
The result
The whole loft is now usable storage, and it's safe to walk on anywhere. Boarding a loft this size is a bigger job than a walkway, but it turns a dead space into one of the most useful rooms in the house.
If your loft has a lot of space going to waste, take a look at our loft boarding service. If the insulation underneath needs topping up first, we can do that on the same visit: see loft insulation.
