What we found
This loft has a traditional cut roof, with heavy timbers, purlins and an older mesh-backed felt under the tiles. Part of the floor had already been boarded for storage, but the open bays alongside needed proper insulation.
What we did
- Laid fresh mineral wool loft roll snugly between the joists across the open bays, with no gaps at the edges.
- Worked the insulation neatly around the pipework and cables rather than leaving them buried or exposed.
- Left the existing boarded strip in place so the owners kept their storage.
- Kept the eaves clear so the roof space stays ventilated.
The result
The open part of the loft now has an even, unbroken layer of insulation, and the storage strip is still there to use. In lofts where storage matters, we can also raise the boarding so there's full-depth insulation under it as well. See loft boarding.
