Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf

Loft Insulation in Aberdare

Aberdare is the main town of the Cynon Valley, and its housing is more varied than in many valley towns: hillside terraces, a good number of large Victorian and Edwardian houses, and sizeable estates from the post-war decades. We fit loft insulation in Aberdare across all of them.

Our team travels from Cardiff up the A470 and the A4059, so a survey takes a little planning but no more than that. You'll get a clear written quote, usually within 24 hours, and most jobs are done in a day.

Aberdare's housing, from terraces to town-centre villas

Aberdare grew on coal and iron in the 1800s, and those who did well from it built substantial houses around the town centre and Aberdare Park. Many have tall roofs, attic rooms or big open lofts, and some still have their original lath-and-plaster ceilings below.

Around them, and up both sides of the valley towards Trecynon, Cwmbach and Abernant, are the long stone terraces typical of the coalfield, with small lofts and slate roofs. Further out, estates built from the 1950s to the 1970s brought semis and short terraces with lower-pitched roofs and simpler loft spaces.

That spread means there's no single Aberdare loft. A villa with an attic room needs a very different plan from a 1960s semi, and we price each one on what's actually up there.

What Aberdare homes usually need

Local considerations for Aberdare homes

The town centre is a conservation area, but insulating inside a loft doesn't change the outside of a house and normally needs no consent. Listed buildings are different, so tell us if yours is listed. Hillside streets often mean parking on a gradient, which we sort out when we book. In the bigger period houses, the loft hatch is sometimes tucked into a bedroom cupboard or a back landing, so let us know where yours is when you call.

If you're weighing up rafter-level multifoil against loft roll, our SuperFOIL vs mineral wool comparison sets out the trade-offs, and our loft boarding service explains how raised boards are fitted.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Aberdare: FAQs

Can you insulate an attic room in an older Aberdare house?

Yes. Attic rooms usually have three parts to deal with: the sloping ceilings, the short knee walls and the small voids behind and above them. We fit SuperFOIL to the rafters where the room is used and insulate the voids we can reach. The aim is a warm room without losing headroom, and we check access and existing finishes at the survey.

What depth of insulation should my 1960s semi in Aberdare have?

The widely recommended depth for mineral wool in a loft is 270mm. Houses of that era were often built with very little, and early insulation will have flattened over time. We measure what's there, then top it up with Knauf Earthwool, laying the second layer across the joists so there are no cold strips.

Do you come out to Aberdare from Cardiff?

Yes. Our team travels from Cardiff up the A470 and into the Cynon Valley. We agree a survey time that suits you, including weekends, as we work Monday to Sunday from 8am to 6pm. Once you've accepted the quote, we book the installation in.

We have lath-and-plaster ceilings in our Aberdare villa. Is it safe to work above them?

Yes, with care. Old lath and plaster becomes brittle, and a misplaced knee between the joists or a heavy point load can crack it or break the plaster keys. We lay crawl boards across the joists, keep materials spread out and use lightweight mineral wool. If we spot existing cracks or sagging, we point them out before any work starts.
