Loft Insulation in Mountain Ash
We carry out loft insulation in Mountain Ash and the neighbouring Cynon Valley communities, from Penrhiwceiber and Miskin to Cefnpennar on the hillside above. Our team comes up from Cardiff on the A470 and turns off for the Cynon Valley at Abercynon.
In a narrow valley that sees as much rain as this one, insulating a loft is only half the job. We look at the condition of the roof, the airflow at the eaves and any signs of damp before recommending anything, so the work keeps the house warm without trapping moisture. The survey is free and your written quote usually follows within 24 hours.

Housing in a coal valley town
Mountain Ash grew around its collieries in the mid-nineteenth century, including Nixon's Navigation and Deep Duffryn, and the population multiplied within a few decades. The homes built for those workers still make up much of the town: long terraces of local stone, stepped along the valley sides, with shallow roofs, small loft spaces and slate coverings that are often well over a century old.
Many of those roofs have been re-slated at some point, but plenty have not, and some still have no underlay at all. Wind-driven rain and condensation both find their way in, so the timbers in a Mountain Ash loft can tell you a lot. Black spotting on rafters, damp patches around the chimney breast and rusted nails are common finds.
Later council housing and smaller private developments fill some of the flatter ground and the upper slopes. These tend to have bigger, simpler lofts, but they share the same weather, and their insulation is often the original thin layer.
What Mountain Ash homes usually need

Loft Mould Treatment in Mountain Ash
Damp valley air and old, unlined slate roofs make mould on the underside of the roof one of the most common problems we are asked about in Mountain Ash.

Spray Foam Removal in Mountain Ash
Some valley homeowners had spray foam applied to hold old slates in place, and when it traps moisture against the timbers we can strip it out and re-insulate properly.

Loft Insulation in Mountain Ash
Once the roof is sound and ventilated, mineral wool laid between and over the joists is still the most effective way to keep heat in a terrace bedroom.
Working on steep Cynon Valley streets
Many terraces in Mountain Ash run across the hillside, so the front door may be at the top of a flight of steps and the back at a lane below. We carry everything by hand and ask about access when we book, so the day runs smoothly.
We never lay new insulation over wet timbers or a leaking roof. If we find a problem, we explain it and you can get it fixed first. Our guide to loft condensation and mould explains why ventilation matters so much, and if you are unsure whether old foam needs to come out, read our spray foam removal guide.
Loft insulation in Mountain Ash: FAQs
Why are the rafters in my Mountain Ash loft turning black?
It is nearly always mould caused by condensation. Warm, humid air from bathrooms and kitchens rises into a cold roof, and in an older terrace with blocked or missing eaves ventilation it has nowhere to go. We treat the timbers with a fungicide, then deal with the cause by restoring airflow and sealing gaps around the hatch, pipes and light fittings.
Someone sprayed foam under my roof years ago. Should it come out?
Not always, but it is worth having it checked. Foam stuck directly to rafters and slates can hold moisture against the timber, hide rot and make the roof hard to repair. Some mortgage lenders and surveyors are also wary of it. We inspect it, tell you honestly whether removal is needed, and if so we strip it, clean the timbers and re-insulate.
Is my terrace loft too small to insulate?
Very rarely. Even a shallow terrace loft can take a good depth of mineral wool across most of its floor. Near the eaves, where the roof comes down low, we taper the insulation so the ventilation gap stays open. If there is genuinely no room, we will talk you through other options rather than cram it in.
Do you cover Penrhiwceiber, Miskin and Cefnpennar?
Yes. We cover Mountain Ash and the villages around it in the CF45 area, along with the rest of the Cynon Valley. We travel up from Cardiff, so we will arrange a survey date that works for both of us. Get in touch and we will confirm your street is within our area.
