Loft Insulation in Clevedon

Our team crosses the Severn on the M4 and drops down the M5 to junction 20 to carry out loft insulation in Clevedon. It is a town with two very different kinds of roof: the tall Victorian villas that climb the hill above the pier, and the post-war and later family houses that spread out towards the motorway.

The free survey tells us which you have and what condition it is in. We check insulation depth, ventilation and any signs of damp, then put a clear written quote in your inbox, usually within 24 hours. A standard top-up rarely takes more than a day.

Seaside villas and the newer side of town

Clevedon grew as a Victorian resort, and much of the older town is stone-built, with large villas, terraces and grand semis on the slopes around Hill Road and above the seafront. Their roofs are steep and complicated, with hips, valleys, dormers and separate voids over bays and back wings. Insulation in these lofts tends to be patchy: a newer roll over the main ceiling, with the awkward corners and rear sections left bare.

Away from the seafront, Clevedon has large areas of mid and late twentieth-century housing, from 1950s semis to bungalows and 1970s and 1980s estates, plus more recent building on the edges. These roofs are lower and plainer. A loft insulated to the standard of its day will often hold 100mm or so of fibreglass, well short of the 270mm usually recommended now, so a top-up is a quick win.

What Clevedon homes usually need

Conservation areas, estuary weather and parking

Large parts of Victorian Clevedon fall within conservation areas. Insulation laid inside the roof does not change the outside of a building, so it rarely needs consent, but if your house is listed it is worth checking with North Somerset Council before any work. The town looks straight across the estuary to Wales, and westerly storms push rain hard against these roofs. Keeping ventilation open at the eaves is part of every job, as our loft condensation and mould guide explains.

Parking near the seafront and on the steeper villa streets can be limited, so we agree where the van will go when we book. For mould already visible on timbers, see our loft mould treatment service.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Clevedon: FAQs

Why is there black mould on the roof timbers of my Clevedon villa?

In most cases it is condensation. Warm, moist air rises from the house into a cold loft and settles on the underside of the roof, and in an exposed seaside house that is made worse by damp air coming in from outside. Blocked eaves, a missing hatch seal and bathroom fans venting into the loft are the usual causes. We treat the timbers and fix the cause.

Do I need building regulations approval to top up insulation in Clevedon?

Clevedon is in England, so Approved Document L for England applies to energy efficiency work. Laying extra insulation over an existing loft floor does not normally need a building control application. Work that involves replacing a large part of the roof covering is different. We can talk through your situation at the survey.

Can you insulate the separate loft spaces over bays and rear wings?

Often, yes. Many Victorian houses in Clevedon have several small roof voids rather than one open loft. Where there is a hatch or we can reach them safely from the main loft, we insulate them as well. If a void is sealed off, we will explain the options rather than leave a cold spot unmentioned.
