Loft Insulation in Hereford

We carry out loft insulation in Hereford and across the HR1, HR2 and HR4 districts. From Cardiff, the team heads up through Abergavenny and along the A465 into the city, so we book Hereford surveys and installs in advance.

Hereford is inland, sheltered by hills and well away from the moderating effect of the sea, so winter nights get colder here than on the South Wales coast. A properly insulated loft keeps more of your heating where it belongs. We survey for free, explain what your roof needs and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

A cathedral city with a mixed housing stock

Around the cathedral and the old city centre, Hereford has Georgian and earlier buildings, many with complicated roofs and limited access to the roof space. Spreading out from there are streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, with compact lofts, slate roofs and old lath-and-plaster ceilings.

The twentieth century added large areas of council and private housing on both sides of the Wye, and more recent estates continue to extend the city's edges. Post-war semis and bungalows tend to have straightforward lofts with thin early insulation, while newer homes are better insulated but rarely boarded or easy to reach.

Herefordshire is one of England's most rural counties, and many of the city's outer streets back onto farmland and orchards. That brings mice and the occasional rat into roof spaces as the weather turns. Parts of the city near the Wye have also flooded, notably in February 2020, though flooding affects ground floors far more than lofts.

What Hereford homes usually need

Before we visit your Hereford home

Hereford is in England, so English Building Regulations apply, and Herefordshire Council handles listed building and conservation matters for the city's older properties. Insulating inside a loft is normally straightforward, but listed homes may need consent.

We travel from Cardiff, so we cannot offer same-day call-outs here, but we will agree a firm date and arrive prepared with everything the job needs. If you are deciding between materials, our guide comparing SuperFOIL and mineral wool is a useful start, and our rodent proofing service explains how we keep pests out.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Hereford: FAQs

How far do you travel to reach Hereford?

Hereford is one of the furthest places we cover from our Cardiff base, reached via Abergavenny and the A465. Because of the distance, we schedule surveys and installations ahead of time on set days. Once we are on site, most standard loft insulation jobs are still completed within a day.

Will loft insulation help in a cold Hereford winter?

Yes. A large share of the heat lost from an uninsulated home escapes through the roof, and that matters more in a frost-prone inland city. Topping a loft up to the widely recommended 270mm keeps bedrooms warmer for longer after the heating goes off. We also lag tanks and pipes so they are protected in hard frosts.

We use our loft as a playroom. Can the slopes be insulated?

Yes. Where a loft is used as a room, insulating the floor would leave the room itself cold. Instead we fit SuperFOIL multifoil to the rafters and sloping ceilings where we can reach them, along with the small voids behind any knee walls. We check headroom and ventilation first.

Can you insulate the loft of a Victorian terrace in Hereford?

Yes. These lofts are often compact, with lath-and-plaster ceilings that need gentle handling. We lay crawl boards across the joists, keep the eaves ventilation open and top the insulation up with mineral wool. Old water tanks and pipework are lagged at the same time so they are not left exposed in the colder roof space.
