Loft Insulation in Ross-on-Wye
Ross-on-Wye stands on a red sandstone bluff above a loop of the river, with its Market House and church spire at the top of the town. We carry out loft insulation in Ross-on-Wye and the nearby HR9 villages, with our Cardiff team heading up the A449 and the A40 through Monmouth to reach you.
It is a longer trip for us, so we arrange visits ahead of time. Surveys are free, and once we have seen the loft you can expect a written quote within about 24 hours.
Homes in and around the town vary so much that the survey is where we decide the method, rather than arriving with a fixed plan.

Sandstone, brick and the houses beyond the old town
The historic core of Ross is a conservation area full of old sandstone and brick buildings, many of them listed, along with Victorian villas and terraces on the roads leading out of the centre. Lofts in these properties are often irregular, with hand-cut timbers, cramped eaves and very little insulation. Some have been partly floored or used for storage for generations, and taking that away isn't always an option.
Outside the centre, the town has post-war council housing, bungalows and later private estates, along with newer developments on the edges. In the surrounding countryside there are stone cottages and farmhouses that are often heated without mains gas, so keeping heat in the roof is a particular priority. Rural and riverside homes also see more visits from rodents than town-centre flats.
What Ross-on-Wye homes usually need

Rodent Proofing in Ross-on-Wye
Cottages and outbuildings around Ross sit close to fields and woodland, and we close up the gaps rats and mice use to get under the roof.

SuperFOIL Insulation in Ross-on-Wye
Older town houses where the loft is used as storage suit multifoil at the rafters, keeping the space usable and protecting old ceilings.

Loft Insulation in Ross-on-Wye
Post-war houses and bungalows have open lofts that can be brought up to 270mm of mineral wool quickly and with little mess.
Listed buildings, river damp and rural access
With a large conservation area and many listed buildings in the centre, it is worth checking with Herefordshire Council before making changes to a historic property, as listed building consent can apply to internal work. Laying breathable mineral wool between joists is the least intrusive option, and our comparison of SuperFOIL and mineral wool sets out the trade-offs.
The Wye brings river mists and damp air, especially to the lower parts of town, so ventilation is checked on every survey. For older roofs with signs of mice or rats, our rodent proofing page explains what is involved.
Loft insulation in Ross-on-Wye: FAQs
Can you insulate a loft in a listed building in Ross-on-Wye?
Often, but consent may be required depending on the work. Breathable materials laid between joists, with no changes to the roof structure, are usually the most acceptable. Herefordshire Council's conservation team can advise on your property. We will describe our proposed method clearly so you can share it with them before work begins.
Our cottage outside Ross is off the gas grid. Is loft insulation still worth doing?
Yes, arguably more so. Homes heated by oil, LPG or electricity tend to have higher heating costs, so keeping warmth in matters. Old cottages often have very little insulation in the roof. A full top-up, combined with draught-proofing the hatch, makes a real difference to how warm upstairs rooms stay.
How do you get to Ross-on-Wye from Cardiff?
We travel via Newport, the A449 and the A40 through Monmouth. Because it is a longer drive, we schedule Ross surveys and installs in advance rather than offering same-day visits. We work seven days a week between 8am and 6pm, so there is usually a convenient slot.
Can mist off the River Wye cause damp in my loft?
It adds to it. Damp air drifts into roof spaces through the eaves and gaps under tiles, and on cold nights it condenses on the underside of the roof. In most cases the bigger source is moisture rising from the house itself. Keeping the eaves clear, sealing the hatch and venting bathrooms outside rather than into the loft usually brings it under control.
