A Georgian High Street and its hinterland
Serious fires in 1747 and 1765 destroyed much of Honiton, and most of the High Street was rebuilt afterwards in Georgian style. Those brick and rendered townhouses have deep plans, roofs hidden behind parapets in some cases, and lofts with valleys, old timbers and very limited insulation. Ceilings are often lath and plaster and need careful handling.
Around the centre are Victorian houses, post-war council homes, bungalows and estates from later decades, plus newer developments on the edges of town. The surrounding villages and farms include stone and cob cottages, some thatched. Cob and thatch need a breathable approach and specialist judgement, so we survey them carefully and will say plainly if a different trade is better placed to help.
What Honiton homes usually need

SuperFOIL Insulation in Honiton
Georgian townhouses on the High Street with lofts used for storage suit multifoil on the rafters, which keeps the space useful and warm.

Loft Mould Treatment in Honiton
Damp Devon winters and poorly vented valley roofs can leave mould on timbers, and we treat it and fix the ventilation that caused it.

Rodent Proofing in Honiton
Homes on the rural edge of Honiton see mice and rats in colder months, and we seal the gaps they use and replace fouled insulation.
Older buildings and valley damp
Honiton's centre is a conservation area with a large number of listed buildings, so owners should check with East Devon District Council before work on a historic property. Approved Document L for England sets the energy efficiency rules here, though a simple top-up rarely needs building control involvement.
Sitting low in the Otter valley, the town is prone to damp, still air on winter mornings, and condensation in lofts is a frequent find. Our guide to loft condensation and mould explains the causes, and the loft mould treatment page covers what we do about it.
Winter fog and frost can linger in the valley bottom, and roof spaces that are cold and poorly ventilated are where condensation shows first. We check that bathroom and kitchen fans vent outside, as one ducted into the loft can soak the timbers above it.
Loft insulation in Honiton: FAQs
Can you insulate the loft of a Georgian house on Honiton High Street?
Usually, yes. These houses often have complex roofs and fragile ceilings, so we lay crawl boards and work carefully. If the property is listed, check consent with East Devon District Council first. Where you want to keep the loft for storage, multifoil on the rafters may suit better than roll on the floor.
Do you insulate cob or thatched cottages near Honiton?
We will survey them, but cob walls and thatched roofs need breathable materials and a specialist approach. Standard methods can trap moisture and cause damage. If we think your cottage would be better served by a conservation specialist, we will tell you honestly rather than fit something unsuitable.
Is Honiton too far for you to cover?
No. It is a long drive, reached from Cardiff over the Severn and down the M5. We book Honiton surveys and installs in advance and group them sensibly, so you will have a clear date. We work any day of the week between 8am and 6pm.
Do Honiton's newer homes need insulation work?
Some do. Estates built from the 1970s to the 1990s on the edges of town usually have less insulation than is recommended today, and it may have been squashed by stored boxes or disturbed by aerial installers. A short survey shows whether a top-up is worthwhile. Houses built more recently often need nothing more than boarding or a ladder.
