Loft Insulation in Chard
Chard is Somerset's southernmost town, close to the Devon and Dorset borders, with a long main street and an industrial past built on lace and textile mills. Most homes here fall into three groups: older houses in and around the centre, large post-war estates, and newer developments on the edges. Each needs a slightly different approach to loft insulation in Chard.
We travel from Cardiff down the M5 to Taunton and south on the A358, so visits are arranged in advance. Surveys are free, quotes usually arrive within 24 hours, and a standard install is normally done in a day. Our loft boarding page explains how we add storage without crushing the insulation.

Mill-town terraces, post-war estates and new builds
Around the town centre are Georgian and Victorian buildings, terraces once lived in by mill workers, and a few much older properties, some in local stone. Their roofs are typically slate or clay tile with modest lofts, and the insulation, where it exists, is often an old layer that has settled to a fraction of its depth.
Chard grew considerably in the second half of the twentieth century, and estates of semis, terraces and bungalows now make up a large share of the town. Their lofts are easy to work in, though the original insulation is rarely up to today's 270mm. More recent housing on the edges of town is well insulated but often unboarded, which is where boarding and better access come in.
What Chard homes usually need

Loft Insulation in Chard
The town's many post-war semis and bungalows usually just need their original layer topped up to 270mm, a quick job in an open loft.

Loft Boarding in Chard
Bungalows don't have much storage elsewhere, so a raised loft floor is often the most useful upgrade once the insulation is right.

Rodent Proofing in Chard
Chard is surrounded by farmland and hills, and older roofs with gaps at the eaves let mice in during autumn, so we seal entry points and replace soiled insulation.
Things to know for a Chard loft job
Some of the older streets near the centre have limited parking, while the estates usually have driveways or space nearby; we check which applies when booking. Bungalow hatches are often in a narrow hallway, so we bring suitable steps and keep dust sheets down from the front door.
Listed buildings in Chard's historic core may need consent for alterations, but for ordinary homes insulation inside the loft does not need permission. If you're planning storage, see our guide on boarding over insulation properly, and if you suspect visitors in the roof, our rodent proofing service explains what we do.
Loft insulation in Chard: FAQs
Can you board the loft of a Chard bungalow?
Yes. Bungalow lofts are often large and low-pitched, which makes them good storage once boarded. We raise the boards on loft legs so the insulation underneath keeps its full depth, and leave clear routes around tanks and pipework. If the hatch is small, we can look at enlarging it and fitting a ladder at the same time.
How do I know if my Chard loft has enough insulation?
Lift the hatch and look at the joists. If you can see the tops of them, you almost certainly have less than the recommended 270mm. Patchy coverage, gaps at the edges and compressed areas under old storage are other signs. On the survey we measure in several places and tell you honestly if a top-up is worthwhile.
Is Chard within the area you cover?
Yes, though it is one of our longer trips. We drive from Cardiff down the M5 to Taunton and then along the A358, and we book surveys and installation days in advance. Same-day call-outs aren't something we offer this far out, but with appointments seven days a week, finding a convenient date is rarely difficult.
What happens to insulation that mice have been in?
Insulation that has been nested in or fouled should be removed, bagged and disposed of, because it can smell, harbour bacteria and no longer insulates properly. Once the entry points are sealed and the loft is clean, we lay fresh mineral wool to the recommended depth so the space is back to working as it should.
