Loft Insulation in Melksham
Melksham is a working Wiltshire market town on the River Avon, with stone houses at its centre and a lot of newer family homes around it. We fit loft insulation in Melksham and the SN12 area, with our Cardiff team travelling over the Severn and along the M4 before turning south.
We plan visits here in advance because of the distance. Surveys are free and carry no obligation, and written quotes normally follow within 24 hours.

Stone town centre, factory-era terraces and new estates
The older part of Melksham, around the Market Place and the river, is built largely of local stone, with Georgian and earlier houses and Victorian terraces. These roofs tend to be steep, with uneven timbers and little or no modern insulation. Some homeowners use part of the loft for storage, which is awkward to combine with thick roll on the floor.
Industry, most famously rubber manufacturing, brought later growth, and the town now has extensive post-war housing, 1970s and 1980s estates, and plenty of recent building on its eastern side and at Bowerhill. These newer houses have trussed roofs with tight hatches, often in a landing ceiling, and many owners never go up there because getting in is awkward. Fitting a proper ladder is often what turns a forgotten roof space into one that gets used and kept in good order.
What Melksham homes usually need

Loft Ladders in Melksham
Melksham's newer estate homes often have narrow hatches with no ladder, and a sliding aluminium ladder makes the loft safe and easy to reach.

Loft Insulation in Melksham
Post-war and 1970s semis around the town tend to have thin old fibreglass, and topping up to 270mm is quick in a simple roof.

SuperFOIL Insulation in Melksham
In older stone houses where the roof space is used for storage, multifoil on the rafters gives warmth without filling the floor.
Getting into Melksham lofts
Many hatches on Melksham's estates are on the small side, and some sit above stairwells where safety matters. During the survey we measure the opening, check the ceiling joists and tell you which ladders will fit or whether the hatch needs widening. Our guide to choosing a loft ladder walks through the main types.
The town centre includes a conservation area, so for historic homes check with Wiltshire Council if you are unsure about consent. Inland, sheltered and fairly low-lying, Melksham lofts are more at risk from condensation than storm damage, and ventilation is part of every job. See our loft ladder service for details.
On the older streets near the Market Place, parking can be limited, so we talk through where to unload when we book. Insulation and ladder work are often combined in one visit to keep disruption down.
Loft insulation in Melksham: FAQs
Can you fit a loft ladder if the hatch in my Melksham home is small?
Often, yes. Some compact ladders are designed for smaller openings. If the hatch is too small, we can usually enlarge it within the existing ceiling joists, trimming and framing the opening neatly. We measure on the survey and explain the options before quoting.
Is it worth insulating a loft I hardly ever go into?
Yes. The loft floor separates your heated home from a cold roof, whether you go up there or not. If the insulation is thin or has gaps, warmth escapes all year round. Many people only discover how little is there when they finally get a ladder fitted and take a look.
We store things in the loft of our stone house. How can we insulate it?
One option is SuperFOIL multifoil fixed to the rafters, which insulates the roof slope and keeps the floor space free for storage. Another is raised boarding over mineral wool. The right choice depends on the roof structure and headroom, which we assess on the survey.
Do you cover Bowerhill and the newer estates on the east side of Melksham?
Yes. Most of the homes there have trussed roofs, a modest original layer of insulation and a hatch with no ladder. A typical visit covers topping up the insulation, raised boarding around the hatch if you want storage, and a fitted ladder, all of which can often be done together in a single day.
