Cloth-town stone and late twentieth-century growth
The centre of Trowbridge holds fine Georgian clothiers' houses and rows of smaller stone cottages built for weavers and mill workers. Most are of local limestone with stone tile or slate roofs, and their lofts are typically small, uneven and lightly insulated, sometimes with lath-and-plaster ceilings underneath. Victorian brick terraces fill many of the streets around them, and beyond those come interwar and post-war semis built as the town spread past its mills, usually with simple roofs and a straight run of joists that make a top-up quick.
The town grew a great deal in the later twentieth century, with estates to the east and south, including the large Paxcroft Mead development towards Hilperton. These 1980s and 1990s houses tend to have trussed roofs and an original layer of insulation that is now thinner than today's recommendations. They are also the generation of homes in which owners sometimes paid for spray foam on the roof underside, which can now cause problems when selling or remortgaging.
What Trowbridge homes usually need

Loft Insulation in Trowbridge
Estate homes from the 1980s and 1990s usually need a straightforward mineral wool top-up to reach the 270mm now recommended.

Spray Foam Removal in Trowbridge
Where sprayed foam has been applied to roof timbers, we remove it, clean the rafters for inspection and re-insulate at the loft floor.

Loft Boarding in Trowbridge
Families on Trowbridge's larger estates often want storage up top, and raised boards protect the insulation depth beneath them.
Conservation areas and inland weather
Much of central Trowbridge is a conservation area with many listed buildings, so for historic houses we recommend checking with Wiltshire Council before any work. Insulation inside the loft rarely changes a building's appearance, but listed status can bring extra requirements. The town is inland and sheltered compared with the coast, so condensation is a bigger concern here than wind-driven rain.
Approved Document L for England applies to energy efficiency work in Trowbridge. If you are worried about foam on your rafters, our spray foam removal guide covers what to expect, and our loft insulation depth guide explains the recommended thickness.
Parking on the narrow streets of the old town is limited, so we agree arrangements when booking.
Loft insulation in Trowbridge: FAQs
Our Paxcroft Mead house already has loft insulation. Do we need more?
It depends on what is there now. Houses of that age were often built with less depth than the 270mm widely recommended today, and insulation can settle or be compressed by stored items. On the survey we measure it and only recommend a top-up if it is worth doing.
Can you insulate a stone weavers' cottage loft in Trowbridge?
Yes. These lofts are often small and uneven, with limited headroom near the eaves. We use mineral wool roll that can be cut and fitted closely between irregular joists, keep the eaves ventilated, and work carefully over old ceilings. If the cottage is listed, check consent requirements first.
Why would spray foam in my loft cause problems with a mortgage?
Many lenders and surveyors are cautious about sprayed polyurethane foam because it can trap moisture against roof timbers and make it impossible to check their condition. That can lead to a down-valuation or a refusal to lend. Removing the foam and insulating at the loft floor usually resolves the concern.
Do you cover Hilperton and the villages around Trowbridge?
Yes. We cover Trowbridge and the surrounding area, including Hilperton and nearby villages. The housing ranges from old stone cottages to modern estates, and we tailor the work to what we find in the roof. Tell us your address when you get in touch and we will arrange a survey date in advance.
