Loft Insulation in Yate

We install loft insulation in Yate, Chipping Sodbury and the rest of BS37. Our team travels from Cardiff over the Prince of Wales Bridge and round the north side of Bristol, picking up the A432 into town.

Yate is largely a town of the 1960s onwards, and the homes from that building boom are now well past due for a loft upgrade. A free survey shows how much insulation you really have and whether the roof space is ventilating properly. You then get a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

How Yate grew, decade by decade

Yate's growth came in stages. Estates appeared off Station Road in the 1920s near the old aircraft factory, then the Ridge in the 1950s. In the 1960s the town was designated for major development, and large areas, including Stanshawes, were built once celestine mining on that land had finished. Many of those estates follow the Radburn layout, where houses face footpaths and green spaces and cars are kept in separate garage courts.

Later expansion at North Yate, known locally as Brimsham Park, continued through the 1990s and 2000s with conventional streets. To the east, the old market town of Chipping Sodbury adds stone cottages and town houses with far older roofs.

In the 1960s and 70s homes, we commonly find a thin layer of early insulation, bathroom fans ducted into the loft rather than outside, and hatches with no ladder. Each of those is simple to fix in a single visit.

What Yate homes usually need

Getting materials in on a Radburn estate

On Radburn-style estates the front door often faces a footpath, with parking in a garage court some distance away. Insulation rolls are light, so a short carry is no problem, but tell us about the layout when you book so we can plan. We also lay protective sheets along the route through the house.

If you have noticed damp staining or a musty smell upstairs, read our guide to condensation and mould in lofts. For help picking a ladder that suits your hatch, see our loft ladder service.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Yate: FAQs

We can't park outside our Yate house. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many houses on Yate's older estates face footpaths, with parking in garage courts nearby. Mineral wool rolls are light and compressed for transport, so we carry them in by hand. We just need to know where the nearest parking is and whether there are any steps or narrow paths on the way.

My bathroom fan seems to blow into the loft. Does that matter?

Yes. An extractor fan that ends in the loft pushes warm, wet air straight onto the cold roof timbers, which is a classic cause of mould and dripping condensation. The duct should run to an outside vent. We will point it out on the survey, and treat any mould already present.

Do you also cover Chipping Sodbury?

Yes, along with the rest of the BS37 area. Chipping Sodbury's older stone properties have more traditional roofs, and we take extra care with old timbers and ceilings there. We travel from Cardiff, so we book surveys in advance at a time that suits you.

How much loft insulation should a Yate house have?

Around 270mm of mineral wool is the widely recommended depth for a loft floor. Many of Yate's 1960s and 70s homes were built with far less, and what is there has often settled or been moved around. If the insulation is level with the top of the joists or lower, it is time for a top-up. We measure it on the survey.
