Yeovil, Somerset

Loft Insulation in Yeovil

Yeovil is a Somerset town with a long working history, from glove-making to the helicopters still built at the Westland site. Its homes range from hamstone buildings and Victorian terraces near the centre to large post-war estates and new housing on the edges of town. Loft insulation in Yeovil needs to suit each of these.

Yeovil is one of the furthest towns we travel to from Cardiff, down the M5 into Somerset, so we always book visits well in advance and plan the day around your job. The survey is free, and you'll get a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Hamstone, Victorian streets and modern estates

Older buildings in and around Yeovil use the golden stone quarried nearby at Ham Hill. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces that grew up with the gloving and engineering trades have compact lofts, older timbers and generally very little insulation. Some of these roofs have had felt replaced or foam added over the years, and gaps at the eaves let in mice from gardens and the countryside around the town.

Through the second half of the twentieth century Yeovil expanded with estates of semis, bungalows and terraces, and large new developments continue on the edge of town. Post-war lofts are usually open and easy to top up. Newer homes have trussed roofs that already hold a reasonable depth of insulation, and their owners mainly want to use the space for storage.

What Yeovil homes usually need

Things to know for Yeovil homes

Because Yeovil is a longer trip from Cardiff, we'll be clear about available dates from the start rather than promise a visit we can't make. For listed hamstone buildings, check with Somerset Council before work if you're unsure whether consent is needed.

Hamstone and older brick houses need their lofts to breathe, so we never pack insulation tight into the eaves. Our guide to how much loft insulation you need explains depths, and the loft boarding page shows how raised boards are fitted.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Yeovil: FAQs

Do you really travel to Yeovil from Cardiff?

Yes, though it's one of the longer trips we make. We come down the M5 into Somerset and plan Yeovil visits well in advance, often grouping work in the area on the same days. The survey is still free and the written quote usually arrives within 24 hours. If our dates don't suit you, we'll say so honestly at the start.

What's the best insulation for an older hamstone cottage?

Usually mineral wool laid on the loft floor, because it lets moisture move through rather than trapping it against stone and timber. Keeping the eaves ventilated matters just as much. If the roof space is used as a room, we look at multifoil on the rafters, but only after checking how the roof deals with moisture.

Can I board my new-build loft in Yeovil?

In most cases. New-build lofts have trussed roofs and insulation laid to a good depth, so the boards have to sit above it on loft legs rather than on the joists. We fit a boarded area around the trusses without cutting them, and can add a loft ladder if access is awkward.

There are noises in our Yeovil loft after dark. Could it be mice?

It's most likely mice or rats, especially if you're close to fields or gardens. Check for droppings near the hatch and along the eaves, and don't store food up there. We'll find how they're getting in, seal the gaps, fit mesh where needed and replace contaminated insulation. Our guide to the signs of rodents has more detail.
