Loft Insulation in Splott

Splott grew up in the late Victorian era as housing for workers at the docks and the steelworks on East Moors, and its long, tight streets of terraces still define the area. Loft insulation in Splott means working in compact roof spaces, often through a small hatch, in a house joined to its neighbours on both sides.

Our Cardiff team plans each terraced job around those constraints, from how materials come through the front door to how insulation is fitted against the party walls.

Splott's terraces and their lofts

A typical Splott terrace has a two-storey front under a pitched roof and a narrower rear outshoot housing the kitchen and, upstairs, often the bathroom. The main loft is usually reached through a small hatch on the landing, while the roof over the outshoot is separate, low and often has no access at all.

Many lofts in these streets are shallow, so laying insulation is done kneeling or lying on crawl boards. Some older terraces also have party walls in the roof space that are incomplete or gappy, which lets air, sound and pests pass between houses.

Plenty of roofs have been re-covered at some point, with concrete tiles and a membrane replacing the original slate, while others still have their old slates. Both can be insulated well, but they need slightly different handling at the eaves.

What Splott homes usually need

Galvanised steel mesh fixed along the eaves between the rafters to keep mice and rats out, with insulation laid behind

Rodent Proofing in Splott

Gaps in party walls and at the eaves let mice travel along a terrace. We seal your side, mesh the entry points and replace contaminated insulation.

Working on terraced streets in Splott

Parking on Splott's terraced streets can be tight, so we keep the van as close as we can and bring everything through the house in one go, with dust sheets laid from the front door to the hatch.

If you suspect pests are getting in from next door, our guide to signs of rodents in the loft is a useful first read. For a breakdown of what a terraced job typically involves on price, see loft insulation costs in Cardiff.

Next door in Tremorfa the housing is mostly interwar and later rather than Victorian, with semis and terraces that tend to have roomier lofts. On that side of the area the work is usually simpler, and raised boarding is more often an option.

Loft insulation in Splott: FAQs

Can you insulate a loft with a very small hatch?

In most cases, yes. Mineral wool rolls come compressed and pass through a typical terraced-house hatch without trouble. If your hatch is especially tight or awkwardly placed, we can enlarge it as part of the job. We check the size on the survey so there are no surprises on the day.

The party wall in my loft has gaps. Is that a problem?

It can be. Gaps let draughts, noise and sometimes rodents move between houses, and they can also weaken fire separation. We'll point out any we find. Small openings around the edges can be sealed as part of rodent proofing, while larger gaps in the wall itself are a job for a builder, and we'll tell you if that's the case.

What about the roof over the back kitchen?

The roof over the rear outshoot is usually separate from the main loft and often has no access. In many Splott houses it can't be insulated from inside without opening up the ceiling, which is a bigger job. We concentrate on the main loft, where the biggest improvement is, and will tell you if the back roof can be reached.

Is it worth insulating my terrace if the neighbours haven't done theirs?

Yes. Heat escapes through the roof above your own ceilings, so insulating your loft benefits your house regardless of what's happening next door. The one catch is pests: if mice can pass through gaps in the party wall from a neighbouring loft, it makes sense to seal your side at the same time as insulating.
