Loft Insulation in Gillingham, Dorset
We provide loft insulation in Gillingham and the SP8 area of north Dorset. It is one of the furthest towns we cover, so our team travels from Cardiff on pre-arranged days, usually combining visits in the area.
Gillingham has grown quickly, and a large share of its homes are recent. Those houses are usually well insulated already, so the work here is more often about using the loft safely, adding boarding and a ladder, and dealing with the condensation that can appear in new roofs. Older homes still benefit from a straightforward top-up. The survey is free and the quote usually arrives within 24 hours.

From railway town to growing commuter base
Gillingham is an ancient settlement, but the town as it looks today owes much to the arrival of the railway in the 1850s. Brickmaking, a silk mill and other industries followed, and brick-built Victorian terraces and villas still line many of the older streets near the centre and the station.
The town carried on expanding through the twentieth century, absorbing surrounding hamlets such as Peacemarsh, Bay and Wyke, and it has kept growing since with large new estates on its edges. That leaves a housing stock weighted heavily towards modern detached and semi-detached homes with trussed roofs.
In brand-new homes, the building takes time to dry out, and lofts in their first winters can show condensation on the underside of the felt or membrane. Older terraces have the opposite problem: settled, decades-old insulation and unlined slate roofs.
What Gillingham homes usually need

Loft Boarding in Gillingham
New Gillingham homes often come with a well-insulated but completely unusable loft, and boards on loft legs create storage above the insulation without crushing it.

Loft Ladders in Gillingham
Developers rarely fit a ladder, so a folding aluminium ladder is usually the first thing owners of newer Gillingham homes ask for.

Loft Mould Treatment in Gillingham
Condensation in a new or newly insulated roof can lead to mould on the timbers, and we treat it and check that the ventilation is doing its job.
Planning a job in north Dorset
Because of the distance from Cardiff, we cannot offer quick call-outs in Gillingham, but we will give you a firm date. English Building Regulations apply here, and Dorset Council handles any listed building queries.
If your new home is still under a builder's warranty, check its terms before having a hatch altered. Our guide to choosing a loft ladder covers the options, and our article on loft condensation explains what to look for in a new roof.
Loft insulation in Gillingham: FAQs
Do you really come to Gillingham from Cardiff?
We do, but we are upfront that it sits at the far edge of our area. We group work in north Dorset onto set days and agree a date with you in advance. Once we arrive, boarding, ladders or a standard insulation top-up are usually finished in a single day.
My new-build loft has water droplets on the membrane. Is that normal?
Some condensation can appear in the first winter or two while a new house dries out, especially if the loft hatch is unsealed or a bathroom fan is poorly ducted. Persistent dripping, staining or mould is not normal. We can inspect it, treat any mould and point out the cause. If the house is under warranty, report it to the builder too.
Will boarding my new-build loft affect the insulation?
Not if it is done properly. New homes usually have a deep layer of insulation, so boards laid directly on the joists would squash it. We fit raised loft legs that lift the boards clear, leaving the insulation at full depth underneath and giving you a sturdy storage floor above.
What about the older terraces near Gillingham station?
The brick terraces and villas from the railway era usually have slate roofs, often without underlay, and old insulation that has settled to a fraction of its original depth. We top them up with mineral wool to the recommended level, keep the eaves ventilated and check for damp or mould on the timbers before laying anything new.
