Cloth-town cottages and steep stone streets
Frome grew rich on wool and cloth, and that history shows in its buildings. The Trinity area, laid out in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, is one of the earliest examples of planned workers' housing in England. Its small stone cottages have low, narrow roofs and very modest lofts, sometimes reached through a hatch barely wide enough for a person.
Around the centre, streets such as Catherine Hill and Gentle Street climb steeply between stone town houses of many periods, a large number of them listed. Roofs here are often old, irregular and patched, with gaps at the eaves that mice and birds find easily.
Beyond the historic core, Frome has twentieth-century semis and bungalows and a lot of newer housing on the edges of town. Those homes have standard lofts that take a deep top-up without fuss, and owners there are more often looking for safe access and storage. Many are also surprised how warm a well-boarded, properly insulated loft keeps the bedrooms below.
What Frome homes usually need

Rodent Proofing in Frome
Old stone roofs with uneven eaves leave plenty of gaps, and in Frome's period cottages we often seal entry points before laying any fresh insulation.

Loft Insulation in Frome
Breathable mineral wool suits Frome's solid-walled stone houses and gives the newer estates an easy route to 270mm.

Loft Ladders in Frome
Narrow hatches in older cottages and bare hatches in newer homes both benefit from a compact sliding or folding aluminium ladder sized to the opening.
Working in Frome's conservation areas
Much of central Frome is a conservation area and many houses are listed. Insulating inside a loft is usually unaffected by conservation area rules, but listed buildings can need consent for internal works, so check with Somerset Council if your home is listed. English Building Regulations apply here.
Steep, narrow streets make parking difficult, so we plan unloading carefully and bring materials in by hand where the van cannot stop outside. If you suspect visitors in the roof, our guide to signs of rodents in the loft will help, and choosing a loft ladder explains what fits a small hatch.
Loft insulation in Frome: FAQs
Can a tiny cottage loft in Frome be insulated?
Usually, yes. Small lofts in Trinity-style cottages can be cramped and awkward, but even a modest depth of mineral wool laid carefully across the ceiling makes a difference, and many can take the full recommended depth. Where access is very tight, we work in short sections and take extra care with old ceilings below.
How do mice get into an old stone roof?
Through gaps at the eaves, around old soffits, where pipes and cables enter, and between stones that have lost their mortar. Once inside, they nest in loose insulation. We find the routes, seal them with mesh and suitable fillers, and replace any insulation that has been soiled.
Is Frome too far for you to cover?
No, though it is towards the edge of our area. We travel from Cardiff, so we schedule surveys and installs on set days rather than at short notice. Standard jobs are still usually completed within a day. Send us your postcode and we will confirm.
Do you cover the newer estates on the edge of Frome?
Yes. Newer homes around the edges of Frome usually have trussed roofs that are already reasonably insulated but lack a ladder or any boarded floor. We fit aluminium ladders sized to the hatch, add raised boarding for storage, and top up insulation where it falls short. Those visits are often finished within a day.
