Loft Insulation in Gloucester

Gloucester is a cathedral city on the Severn with a long industrial past, and that shows in its housing: Victorian terraces around the docks and the old railway areas, large post-war estates to the south and east, and newer homes spreading out towards Quedgeley and Kingsway. Loft insulation in Gloucester has to suit all of them.

It's a longer trip from Cardiff, either over the Prince of Wales Bridge and up the M5 or along the A48 through Chepstow, so we book Gloucester visits well ahead. The survey is free, and a written quote usually follows within 24 hours.

Docks-era terraces, post-war estates and Kingsway

Gloucester's docks and railway industries brought rapid growth in the Victorian period, and areas such as Tredworth, Barton and Kingsholm are full of brick terraces from that time. Their lofts are small, often with old water tanks still in place, aged wiring and insulation that has thinned to almost nothing. Long terraces also let mice and rats move between roof spaces.

After the war, large estates such as Matson were built below Robinswood Hill, followed later by Abbeydale and Abbeymead. Those lofts are open and easy to work in. The newest homes, at Kingsway on the former RAF Quedgeley site and on other recent estates, have trussed roofs that usually need storage solutions rather than more depth.

What Gloucester homes usually need

Working in Gloucester

Parts of the city near the Severn are low-lying and the river has flooded in the past, so damp is something we look for in every older loft. Ventilation at the eaves must stay clear when new insulation goes down. If you're seeing black spots on the timbers, our guide to loft condensation and mould covers the causes.

Terraced streets in Tredworth and Barton have busy on-street parking, so we'll agree timings when you book. If you're dealing with droppings or noises overhead, our rodent proofing service explains what's involved. Post-war houses in Matson and Abbeydale, by contrast, usually have open lofts that a cross-layer of Knauf Earthwool brings up to 270mm in a day.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Gloucester: FAQs

Do you cover Gloucester from Cardiff?

Yes. Gloucester is towards the edge of the area we cover, reached via the M4 and M5 or the A48 through Chepstow. We plan visits in advance and aim to complete standard jobs in a single day once we're there. Surveys are free and quotes usually come back within 24 hours.

Can rats get into my loft from the terrace next door?

Yes. In older Gloucester terraces, gaps in party walls, eaves and around pipework let rodents move from one roof to the next. Sealing your own roof still makes a real difference. We find the routes in, block them with suitable materials and mesh, and remove and replace any insulation that's been nested in or soiled.

We live near the river. Will insulating the loft make damp worse?

Not if it's done properly. Problems arise when insulation blocks the eaves or covers a damp area that hasn't been fixed. We check for leaks, mould and condensation first, keep ventilation paths open and make sure bathroom fans aren't venting into the loft. Done that way, insulation helps keep the house warmer and drier.

Is my Kingsway new-build worth insulating further?

Homes built in the last couple of decades already have a reasonable depth of insulation, so more is rarely the priority. We're more often asked for raised boarding and loft ladders. If the insulation has been moved during wiring or by storing things directly on it, we'll re-lay or top it up while fitting the boards.
