Loft Insulation in Stroud
Stroud sits where five valleys meet on the western edge of the Cotswolds, and its houses climb steep hillsides in local stone. Loft insulation in Stroud means working with old cottages, mill workers' terraces and later estates, often on streets where just reaching the front door is a climb.
Our team travels from Cardiff over the Severn and up the M5. It's a longer drive, so we book surveys in advance and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Stroud's stone cottages, terraces and estates
The town and its valleys grew on the woollen cloth trade, and the mills along the streams were surrounded by cottages and terraces for the people who worked in them. Many are built of Cotswold stone with stone tile or slate roofs, set into the slopes so the back of the house is a storey higher or lower than the front.
Lofts in these older homes are often small, irregular and partly taken up by rooms in the roof. Victorian villas higher up the hillsides have bigger roof spaces, and the twentieth-century estates around the edges of town have conventional lofts that take a straightforward mineral wool top-up.
Old stone walls and rural eaves have plenty of gaps, which mice, rats and squirrels find quickly when the weather turns.
What Stroud homes usually need

SuperFOIL Insulation in Stroud
Stroud cottages with bedrooms built into the roof and little or no loft above suit thin multifoil fixed to the rafters, which keeps the room's headroom.

Rodent Proofing in Stroud
Stone cottages next to fields and woods are prone to rodents getting in at the eaves, so we seal gaps and replace any fouled insulation.

Loft Insulation in Stroud
Estate homes and larger villas with open lofts can usually be topped up to 270mm with Knauf Earthwool in a single day.
Working on Stroud's hillsides
Some of Stroud's streets are steep and narrow, with on-street parking and steps up to the door. We plan access before we arrive and carry materials in by hand where needed. Valleys hold damp air, especially in the steep, wooded bottoms, so ventilation is part of every job. Houses built into a slope can also have a loft that's reached from an unexpected floor, so tell us about any quirks when you call. If your home is listed, check with Stroud District Council before booking.

Loft insulation in Stroud: FAQs
Our Stroud cottage has a bedroom in the roof. Can it be insulated?
Yes, usually from inside. Where the bedroom ceiling follows the roof slope, multifoil can be fixed to the rafters and finished with new plasterboard, or fitted from any voids we can reach. It's more involved than insulating a loft floor, so we look at the ceiling, the voids and the roof covering before quoting.
Do stone cottages need special insulation?
They need the right approach more than a special product. Old stone walls and roofs manage moisture by letting it move, so we avoid sealing roof spaces up. Mineral wool at ceiling level is breathable and works well, and wherever we use multifoil, we make sure the roof can still ventilate.
Do you travel to Stroud from Cardiff?
Yes. Our team crosses the Severn and heads up the M5, and covers Stroud and the surrounding valleys, including the villages in the Slad, Painswick and Nailsworth valleys. Because it's a longer drive, we agree a survey date in advance and book the installation once you've accepted the quote.
Squirrels have got into our loft. What can you do?
We inspect the roof space to find how they're getting in, which is often a gap at the eaves, a loose fascia or a hole near the gable. Once the animals have gone, we seal the entry points with mesh and suitable materials, remove contaminated insulation and re-insulate. If animals are still present, a pest controller needs to deal with them first.
