Loft Insulation in Stoke Gifford
We fit loft insulation in Stoke Gifford and across BS34, along with the boarding and loft ladders that turn a roof space into usable storage. Our team comes over from Cardiff on the M4, across the Prince of Wales Bridge and round the north of Bristol.
Most homes here are modern, so the question is often less about whether the loft has insulation and more about how much it has, and how to use the space without spoiling it. A free survey answers both, and your written quote usually follows within 24 hours.

A village that became a suburb
Until the 1980s Stoke Gifford was a small village strung along North Road, with St Michael's church and a handful of older houses at its heart. In 1987 the area was earmarked for major expansion alongside Bradley Stoke, and estates have been going up ever since, through the 1990s and into the latest developments around Harry Stoke and towards the university campus.
That gives the parish a very particular housing mix. Most homes are detached and semi-detached family houses and townhouses built with trussed rafter roofs. The earlier ones were insulated to the standards of their day, which fell well short of today's 270mm, while the newest are much better but rarely have any boarded floor or a proper ladder. Hatches are often small, and the truss webs leave a central walkway rather than an open floor.
The few older village houses are a different job altogether, with traditional cut roofs and older ceilings that need more care.
What Stoke Gifford homes usually need

Loft Ladders in Stoke Gifford
Many Stoke Gifford homes were handed over with a bare hatch and no ladder, and a folding aluminium ladder makes the loft safe to use for everyday storage.

Loft Boarding in Stoke Gifford
Raised boards along the central run between the trusses give you a solid storage floor while the insulation underneath keeps its full depth.

Loft Insulation in Stoke Gifford
Homes from the first waves of expansion often have thin original insulation, and a cross-layer of Knauf Earthwool brings them up to the recommended depth.
Useful things to know before we visit
Newer estates here often have parking courts or tight driveways, so let us know where the van can stop. On recently built homes, check whether the developer's warranty has any conditions about alterations before booking ladder or hatch work.
Trussed roofs are designed for light storage, not heavy loads, so we will advise on what you can keep up there. Our guide to choosing a loft ladder covers hatch sizes and ladder types, and boarding without crushing insulation explains why we raise the floor.
Loft insulation in Stoke Gifford: FAQs
Can you fit a loft ladder if my hatch is very small?
Often, yes. Some aluminium ladders are made for compact openings. If your hatch is too narrow for a safe ladder, we can usually enlarge it, provided the change does not involve cutting through trusses. We measure the opening and the ceiling height during the survey and recommend a ladder that fits the space you actually have.
My Stoke Gifford house dates from the 1990s. Is its loft insulation still enough?
Quite possibly. Homes from that period were insulated to the regulations of the time, which asked for much less than the 270mm now widely recommended. If the insulation sits level with the top of the joists or below, a second layer laid across them will make a worthwhile difference. We measure it on the survey.
How much can I store on a boarded trussed loft?
Trussed roofs are engineered efficiently, so they are not meant for heavy items. Boxes of decorations, luggage and light household storage are generally fine when spread across a boarded area. Avoid heavy furniture, stacks of books or anything that concentrates weight in one spot. We can show you where the boarding is best placed.
Do you work on the older houses along North Road?
Yes. The handful of older village properties around the church have traditional cut roofs rather than trusses, and often older ceilings below. They usually have more room to move around and store things, but the timbers and plaster need more care. We assess the roof structure and ventilation first, then recommend insulation, boarding or both.
