Loft Insulation in Wells
We carry out loft insulation in Wells and the surrounding BA5 villages. From Cardiff, the team crosses the Severn, passes through Bristol and comes over the Mendip Hills to reach the city.
Wells has a remarkable number of old buildings for its size, and older roofs need insulating differently from modern ones. The materials have to let the structure breathe, and existing ventilation must be left alone. We look at your loft in person, explain what will and will not suit it, and send a written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Medieval streets, Georgian fronts and newer estates
The centre of Wells grew around the cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, and the streets nearby are lined with stone houses spanning several centuries, many of them listed and inside the conservation area. Vicars' Close, the medieval street built for the cathedral's choir, is the most famous example, but plenty of ordinary town houses here are far older than their Georgian or Victorian fronts suggest.
Lofts in these buildings vary enormously. Some have heavy old purlins and rafters, irregular floors and lime plaster ceilings beneath; others have been partly converted at some point. Many had insulation added piecemeal over the years, and in a few cases foam was sprayed under the roof covering.
Away from the centre, Wells has interwar and post-war housing and newer estates on the edges of the city. Those homes have conventional lofts that are quick to bring up to a full depth of mineral wool.
What Wells homes usually need

Loft Insulation in Wells
Knauf Earthwool is vapour-open mineral wool, so it suits the solid stone walls and timber roofs of older Wells houses as well as the modern estates.

Spray Foam Removal in Wells
Foam stuck to the underside of an old roof stops the timbers breathing, and in a historic stone building that is worth putting right before rot sets in.

Loft Mould Treatment in Wells
Where earlier insulation blocked the eaves of an old roof, we often find mould on the rafters, which we treat while restoring the airflow.
Listed buildings, conservation areas and access
Wells is in England, so English Building Regulations apply. If your home is listed, some loft work can need listed building consent, so speak to Somerset Council's conservation officers first if you are unsure. We are happy to describe exactly what we plan to do so you can explain it to them.
Parking in the historic centre is limited, so we will plan the van and unloading in advance, and we lay dust sheets and crawl boards before touching anything in an old loft. If you are worried about old foam, our spray foam removal guide sets out the issues, and the loft mould treatment page explains how we deal with damp timbers.
Loft insulation in Wells: FAQs
What kind of insulation suits an old stone house in Wells?
For most older houses, mineral wool laid on the loft floor is the safest choice because it lets moisture move through rather than trapping it. We avoid anything that seals the underside of an old roof and we keep the eaves and any original vents clear. In a listed building we will discuss each step with you before work starts.
Do you travel to Wells from Cardiff?
Yes. Wells is one of the further places we cover, so we plan surveys and installations ahead rather than offering same-day visits. Most standard loft insulation jobs still take just one day once we are there. Get in touch with your address and we will suggest dates.
Can you tell if earlier work has damaged my roof timbers?
We look for signs during the survey: staining, soft or crumbling wood, mould, and condensation marks on the underside of the roof. If something needs a specialist, such as a timber treatment or roofing contractor, we will say so plainly rather than covering it over with new insulation.
Do the newer estates around Wells need anything different?
Not really. Homes built from the mid-twentieth century onwards on the edges of Wells usually have simple, open lofts or trussed roofs. The work there is a standard top-up to 270mm with mineral wool, lagging tanks and pipes, and sealing the hatch. If you want storage, we can add raised boarding at the same visit.
