Loft Insulation in Midsomer Norton

Midsomer Norton was a coal town until the last pit, at Norton Hill, closed in the 1960s, and many of its houses were built for people who worked the Somerset coalfield. Loft insulation in Midsomer Norton often means modernising old miners' cottages and terraces, alongside the post-war semis and newer estates that have grown up around the town and neighbouring Radstock.

We travel down from Cardiff, over the Prince of Wales Bridge and south of Bristol on the A37. Surveys are booked ahead, cost nothing, and come with a clear written quote, usually within 24 hours.

Coalfield cottages, terraces and newer estates

The town centre runs along the River Somer, and the streets around it, along with Welton, hold stone cottages and terraces from the mining years. These roofs are old and often uneven, lofts can be shallow or partly floored, and party walls don't always rise to the roof. We often find a thin layer of old insulation with gaps where it's been moved or never laid at all.

From the mid-twentieth century the town grew outwards with council and private estates of semis and bungalows, and more housing has been built on the edges in recent years. Those lofts are generally simple, though old loose-fill and thin mineral wool are both common, and homes backing onto fields and green space see their share of mice.

What Midsomer Norton homes usually need

Local considerations in Midsomer Norton

Part of the town centre and Welton is a conservation area. Insulating inside a loft is usually unaffected, but if your house is listed it's worth checking with Bath and North East Somerset Council first. Older stone cottages need ventilation kept open at the eaves so the roof can breathe.

Streets in the older parts of town can be steep and narrow, so we'll agree parking when we book. If you've spotted droppings or chewed cables, our guide to signs of rodents in the loft will help, and our loft insulation service page explains what a top-up involves.

FAQs

Loft insulation in Midsomer Norton: FAQs

Is it safe to insulate over old loose-fill in my Midsomer Norton loft?

In most cases, yes, provided it's dry and clean. We check what's there first, because some older lofts contain vermiculite or other loose materials that need identifying before anyone disturbs them. If it's ordinary loose-fill or old mineral wool in decent condition, we lay new insulation over it to reach the recommended depth.

Can you insulate a miner's cottage with a shallow, awkward loft?

Usually. A shallow loft limits headroom but not the depth of insulation on the floor, which is what matters. We work from crawl boards, take extra care at the eaves where space is tight and make sure ventilation stays clear. If part of the loft has been floored or blocked off, we'll explain what can and can't be reached.

Do you also work in Radstock?

Yes. Radstock shares much of Midsomer Norton's coalfield history and housing, from stone terraces to post-war estates, and we cover it along with the nearby villages. We plan visits from Cardiff in advance, and the survey is free with a written quote usually within 24 hours.

Why is there mould in the loft of my house near the Somer?

Lower ground near rivers tends to hold damp air, and older lofts often have blocked or no ventilation. Add warm, moist air from a bathroom below and condensation forms on the cold roof. We treat the mould with a fungicidal wash and deal with the cause, whether that's ventilation, an extractor fan or a poorly sealed hatch.
